Road Maintenance Operator

Salary: $25.94 hourly

Full-time position with the Public Works Department

About the Role

Under the close supervision of the Foreman, the incumbent performs semi-skilled tasks and operates a variety of equipment and trucks to maintain and build roads and bridges. In addition to equipment operation, incumbents perform manual labor duties related to construction, maintenance, and repair. Duties require some responsibility and independent judgment.

Responsibilities

• Operate trucks/vehicles (e.g., single and tandem axle truck), loader, backhoe, and skid steer (Class A license required to haul skid steer).
• Load, haul, and unload trucks used to transport equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Operate construction, maintenance, and power equipment for construction, repair, and maintenance projects.
• Perform manual labor in construction and maintenance projects.
• Prepare equipment for paint striping of roads and curbs.
• Place barricades to prepare work zones.
• Place and level concrete for road repair.
• Prepare and install guardrails.
• Prepare equipment and areas for snow removal, including installing snow plow blades, inspecting and operating equipment, and installing snow fencing.
• Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment; make minor repairs and report defects to supervisor; clean equipment.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, County Officials, and the public.
• Perform all duties in conformance with safety and security standards.
• Report to assigned worksite with regular, predictable, and consistent attendance.
• Control traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required.
• Perform other duties as directed.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
• Two years of work experience in highway construction and maintenance preferred.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License and Class B CDL license throughout employment.
• Must meet eligibility requirements of acceptable driver standards as defined by the County.
• Subject to DOT random testing; this is a safety-sensitive position.

Skills

• Some knowledge of heavy-equipment operating principles.
• Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations.
• Working knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in street and utility maintenance work.
• Ability to understand and comply with departmental policies and procedures.

• Ability to operate tools, motorized vehicles, and equipment necessary for job duties.
• May operate road grader for routine road maintenance, track loaders, excavators, or boom trucks for training or emergency situations (if qualified).
