Essential Duties
- Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing service department.
- Develop and implement methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services.
- Ensure all nursing service personnel comply with the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
- Make written and oral reports to the Director as necessary.
- Periodically review and update the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
- Participate in facility surveys and updates the resident's written discharge plan as required.
- Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as needed.
- Complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
- Interpret departmental policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.
- Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, and charting.
- Ensure a sufficient number of licensed practical and/or registered nurses and certified nursing assistants are available.
- Delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses.
- Ensure nursing assistants are enrolled in or have graduated from approved training programs.
- Monitor and report on the performance of nursing service personnel.
- Review and evaluate the department’s work force and make recommendations to the Director.
- Ensure departmental disciplinary actions are fair and without bias.
- Report occupational exposures and suspected incidents of fraud to the Administrator.
- Ensure proper use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
Committee Functions
- Attend various facility committee meetings as required.
- Prepare and present written and/or oral reports of nursing service programs and activities to committee(s).
- Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
- Implement recommendations from established committees.
Nursing Care Functions
- Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions and their room assignments.
- Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
- Consult with residents, families, and physicians in planning care.
- Notify the Director of delays in physician visits.
- Visit residents daily to observe and evaluate their physical and emotional status.
- Ensure direct nursing care is provided by qualified personnel.
- Start IVs, obtain specimens, take vital signs, and administer medications.
- Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as necessary.
- Report problem areas to the Director.
- Assist in developing and implementing corrective action.
- Keep the Director informed of resident status and related matters.
- Monitor seriously ill residents and authorize the use of restraints.
- Ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
Staff Development
- Develop and conduct in-service training classes.
- Plan, conduct, and schedule clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
Safety and Sanitation
- Develop safety standards for the nursing service department.
- Evaluate and classify routine and job-related functions to identify potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
- Train personnel on the proper use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
- Maintain an atmosphere of safety and cleanliness.
