Responsibilities
- Mets with nursing staff, as well as support personnel, in planning the shifts services, programs, and activities.
- Signs 24-hour report daily and, when acting as a free-floating supervisor, reviews and signs 24-hour reports in each area.
- Reviews nurses notes on both units to ensure they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care being provided and reflect the residents response to care.
- Communicates with discharging hospitals to ensure necessary information is obtained and received for new and readmissions.
- Provides guidance and supervision to nursing staff to assure quality resident care.
- Ensures a sufficient number of nursing assistants and nurses are available on each tour of duty to provide routine nursing care to all residents.
- Interacts with attending physicians in reviewing treatment plans, records, and signs their orders, progress notes, etc., in accordance with established policies.
- Orders prescribed medications, supplies, and equipment as necessary, and in accordance with established policies.
- Ensures that an adequate supply of floor stock medications, supplies, and equipment are on hand to meet the needs of the residents.
- Oversees narcotic records and necessary documentation as required by regulation and policy. Report any unresolved narcotic issues to on call nursing administration.
- Oversees disposal of drugs and narcotics as required, and in accordance with our established procedures.
- Reviews medications Kardex for completeness of information, accuracy in the transcription of the physicians order, and adherence to stop order policies.
- Aids in development of work assignments, and/or assists in completing and performing such tasks.
- Makes several rounds of the Nursing units.
- Utilizes call out book per policy.
- Reviews complaints and grievances made or filed by your assigned personnel. Makes appropriate reports to the Director of Nursing (DON) as required or as may be necessary.
- Develops and maintains a good working rapport with inter-departmental personnel, as well as other departments within the facility to assure that Nursing services and activities can be adequately maintained to meet the needs of the residents.
- Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the unit and shift.
- Mets with shifts nursing personnel on a regularly scheduled basis to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas and/or the improvement of services.
- Reviews and evaluates assigned departments work force and makes recommendations to the DON.
- Participates in determining assigned shifts staffing requirements, employee performance evaluations, and making recommendations to the DON concerning employee dismissals, transfer, etc.
- Makes rounds with physicians as necessary.
- Implements and maintains established nursing objectives and standards.
- Make periodic checks to evaluate the residents physical and emotional status.
- Mets with residents, and/or family members, as necessary. Reports any problem areas to the Director.
- Ensures efficient management of all nursing units.
- Provides in-service training to staff as needed.
- Maintains the status of all residents and ensures all clinical needs are met. Report changes in status to the Director or ADON in a timely manner.
- Assists in planning for the total needs of the residents.
- Recommends assignment of adequate number of staff to meet the needs of the residents.
- Provides leadership during evening/night shifts to ensure residents, families and employee concerns are addressed in a timely and appropriate manner and communicated to appropriate department head.
- Ensures compliance by nursing staff of all facility policies and procedures as well as state and federal regulations.
- Performs chart audits as requested.
- Monitors medication passes to assure that medications are being administered as ordered.
- Performs as a staff nurse when needed.
Qualifications
- Must be a graduate of an accredited LPN/RN school.
- Minimum of one-year long term care experience preferred.
- Must possess a current, unencumbered, active license to practice as a Licensed Nurse in Maryland.
