About the role
The Registered Nurse works as part of an interdisciplinary team, utilizing the nursing process to provide therapeutic care to patients. They are responsible for coordinating patient care and education, ensuring compliance with departmental policies and practices.
Responsibilities
- Fulfills policies and procedures; demonstrates ability to access online manuals.
- Completes Nursing Assessment upon patient admission, at each shift, and with changes in condition.
- Interprets assessment information and formulates Nursing Diagnoses.
- Develops Plans of Care with individualized interventions, documenting expected/projected patient outcomes.
- Administers medication and IV therapy appropriately, delegates tasks based on others' scope of practice, acts as patient advocate, manages restraint use, ensures MD orders and assessments, and monitors patients.
- Documents all flow sheets and chart forms, including pain scale assessment and reassessment, daily flow sheet, restraint flow sheet, diabetes flow sheet, room/unit orientation, plan of care, educational flow sheet, risk assessment, and MAR.
- Provides patient/family education, completes room/unit orientation, and identifies knowledge deficits related to diagnoses and care.
- Ensures all transfer paperwork is completed, belongings are sent with the patient, and completes 12h/24h chart checks.
- Communicates effectively with all members of the healthcare team, including patient and family, through shift to shift reports, physician rounds, patient/family interactions, and hand-off reports.
- Manages time effectively, organizes and prioritizes responsibilities, takes meal breaks without incurring overtime, and completes shifts on time.
- Maintains regulatory agency requirements, including adherence to National Patient Safety Goals, JCAHO standards, and other relevant protocols.
- Manages patients with THA, TKA, spinal surgery, and those with cystic fibrosis, abdominal organ transplants, and hepatic encephalopathy.
- Manages complex critically ill patients in the ICU/Tele units, using advanced therapeutic modalities like hemodynamic monitoring, CRRT, and ventilator care.
- Accurately identifies patients fitting Core Measure criteria and completes documentation.
- Participates in data collection and process improvements related to Nurse Sensitive Quality Indicators.
- Continuously seeks professional development opportunities and participates in hospital/nursing activities.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN).
- Less than 1 year of acute care experience as a Registered Nurse.
- Current knowledge of treatment practices.
- Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions, and ability to understand, follow, and perform duties, including whole blood collection and apheresis procedures.
- Registered Nurse (RN) license from the CA Board of Registered Nursing.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association.
- Fire Life Safety Training (LA City).
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association (required for certain departments).
- Specialty certification from Keck Hospital of USC, if applicable.
Qualifications
- Specialty certifications from Keck Hospital of USC, if applicable.
- Published peer-reviewed articles or participation in research.
- Experience with managing patients undergoing THA, TKA, spinal surgery, and those with cystic fibrosis, abdominal organ transplants, and hepatic encephalopathy.
- Experience managing complex critically ill patients in the ICU/Tele units, using advanced therapeutic modalities.
- Ability to accurately identify patients fitting Core Measure criteria and complete documentation.
- Continuous participation in professional hospital/nursing activities and ongoing professional development.
