About the role

This structured training program is designed for experienced nurses transitioning into perinatal nursing. Participants will complete orientation in both Postpartum and Labor & Delivery at Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla. The role emphasizes autonomous nursing care, where nurses assess and provide appropriate actions for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. Nurses are expected to practice autonomously, consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance, exercising independent judgment within interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary patient care approaches.

Responsibilities

• Assess and provide autonomous nursing care for patients in Postpartum and Labor & Delivery.
• Exercise independent judgment in high-acuity, fast-paced environments.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to manage complex patient scenarios.
• Respond, intervene, and delegate appropriately in critical situations.

Requirements

• Graduate from an accredited school of Nursing.
• RN License issued by the State of California.
• BLS/CPR certification at time of hire, with commitment to obtain ART within six (6) months of hire.
• Certificate of course completion in Basic Fetal Monitoring.
• NRP certification from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
• Minimum three (3) years of recent RN experience in Critical Care and/or Emergency Services (within the past one year).
• Proficient to expert assessment skills for problem-solving moderately-complex patient scenarios.
• Proficient to expert critical thinking and communication skills to manage multiple levels of information and responsibilities.
• Demonstrated ability to work in high-acuity, fast-paced environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• BSN degree.
• Bilingual English/Spanish (strongly preferred to enhance communication with diverse patient populations).
• Experience working in an academic medical center.
• Evidence of contributions to improving nursing practice through quality improvement initiatives.

Special Conditions

• Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
• Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
• Selected candidate may be hired at the CNIII level pending review and approval by the Nurse Executive Council.
• If applicable, life-support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands-on practice and in-person skills assessment; online-only certification is not acceptable.

Pay

Annual Full Pay Range: $138,330 - $193,892 (prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%). Hourly Equivalent: $66.25 - $92.86. Factors determining compensation include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, certifications, and business/organizational needs.

Schedule

• Nights, 12-hour shifts, Sunday-Saturday.
• 90% appointment percentage (36 hours per week).
