About the Role

A registered professional nurse at Erlanger Health System is responsible for delivering patient care according to the state's Nurse Practice Act, Erlanger's Models of Care/Practice, and established policies and procedures. The nurse supervises other qualified staff, coordinates care with other healthcare professionals, and addresses the physical, spiritual, emotional, and educational needs of patients. All bedside nurses participate in a matrix system with five core competencies: Customer-Focus, Cost-Effective Care, Communication, Competent Care, and Compassionate Care, guiding professional development from novice to expert.

Responsibilities

• Utilize hand-off communication and bedside shift report to effectively communicate with the healthcare team.
• Maintain a safe therapeutic environment by complying with hospital policies and communicating risks.
• Perform and document comprehensive, holistic patient assessments and respond to abnormal diagnostic data.
• Anticipate and intervene in potential emergency situations safely.
• Develop relationships with patients and families to facilitate mutual involvement in care planning.
• Demonstrate basic critical thinking skills and document care concisely, accurately, and completely.
• Complete population-specific mandatory education competencies as defined by the unit.
• Provide culturally competent care and demonstrate awareness of evidence-based practices.
• Manage time effectively, meet punctuality expectations, and demonstrate scheduling flexibility.
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team, resolving conflicts as needed.
• Implement the plan of care and identify resources to meet patient needs.
• Identify and communicate changes in patient conditions that may impact staffing or safe care.
• Contribute to a healthy work environment through professional behavior and conflict resolution.
• Complete hospital and unit-based competencies and mandatory education programs.
• Demonstrate knowledge of and contribute to unit-based performance improvement outcomes.
• Update individual matrix to reflect professional accomplishments.

Requirements

• Current licensure to practice nursing in the state of employment.
• BLS certification completed prior to unit assignment and maintained thereafter.
• ACLS certification required prior to completion of departmental orientation and maintained ongoing.
• Additional unit-specific certifications as required.
• For non-Tennessee residents, Tennessee licensure or multistate licensure from a compact state must be obtained within three months of hire.

Qualifications

• Education:
  • Required: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
• Experience:
  • Required: None.
  • Preferred: Prior experience in patient care in a similar setting.
• Certifications:
  • Preferred: Nationally recognized certification in area of practice.
  • De-escalation training if applicable.
