RN Poison Information Specialist- Atrium Health CMC Ft

About the Role

This full-time, 32-hour position involves providing expert poison information and clinical guidance to healthcare providers and the public. The role requires strong clinical and communication skills to assess exposure cases, formulate care plans, and ensure timely, accurate responses.

Responsibilities

• Obtain a detailed history of exposures, including patient condition, involved agents, and circumstances, tailored to the severity of the case.
• Provide poison information for patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly.
• Utilize information resources (e.g., computerized databases, textbooks, medical literature, consultants) to accurately assess exposure cases.
• Formulate and implement appropriate care plans based on established guidelines, case specifics, and available resources.
• Communicate patient information and treatment recommendations to healthcare facilities and providers.
• Evaluate the appropriateness of assessments and recommendations through established follow-up procedures.
• Provide non-toxicological drug and medical information to callers within the scope of education and experience.
• Offer initial crisis intervention for callers with medical, drug-related, or suicidal concerns, and refer them to appropriate community agencies.
• Refer non-medical callers to relevant agencies in a professional and friendly manner.

Requirements

• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing, ACPE-accredited pharmacy school, or medical school (RN, RPh, PA, MD, or DO).
• Applicable state license to practice required.
• BLS certification required per policy guidelines.
• Obtain certification as a Certified Specialist in Poison Information (CSPI) administered by the AAPCC within three examination periods and maintain recertification as required.
• Two years of clinical experience preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and keyboard skills preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Primarily works in the Poison Center, with the majority of time spent sitting, using the telephone, and working at a computer.
• May assist in patient evaluation and treatment in the Emergency Department as requested.
• Must be able to operate telephone, computer, and recording equipment.
• Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment.
