About the role

Join BSWH McLane Children’s Hospital as a Registered Nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The PICU is a 16‑bed unit that cares for children who are very ill or medically unstable due to serious disease, infection, or trauma such as traumatic brain injury. The unit provides advanced treatment with sophisticated technologies and a multidisciplinary team that includes intensivists, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, Child Life specialists, social workers, pastoral staff, and dietitians, delivering round‑the‑clock care. Pediatric critical care services often involve multiple specialties (e.g., pulmonology, cardiology) and include life‑sustaining care, postsurgical care, pain management, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The patient population spans birth to 18 years with acute and chronic critical conditions. The unit is team‑oriented, participates in unit‑based committees for growth and development, has an active confetti committee that celebrates milestones, and has received the Daisy unit award with numerous winners and nominees. Responsibilities

• Oversee patient care using a professional practice model.
• Conduct detailed clinical assessments and prioritize patient and family needs.
• Create, implement, and evaluate care plans; adjust plans to reach desired outcomes.
• Build relationships, manage discomfort, and maintain professionalism in therapeutic connections with patients and families.
• Develop care plans that reflect values to aid in resolving issues.
• Educate patients, families, nurses, and community members; empower them with knowledge for better healthcare choices.
• Assess and document learning needs regularly.
• Work with colleagues and the community to create care plans.
• Delegate tasks carefully and follow up promptly.
• Use various problem‑solving strategies with patients, families, and staff.
• Recognize limitations and prioritize safety, effectiveness, and efficiency in patient care planning and delivery.

Skills

• Deep understanding of nursing and patient care standards, as well as procedures.
• Knowledge of nursing laws, rules, standards, and guidelines in your area.
• Understanding of hospital procedures and rules.
• Proficiency in medical terms, focusing on health, disease prevention, management, common medications, and their side effects.
• Respect for medical and professional nursing ethics and patient privacy rights.
• Exceptional communication skills for clear expression of thoughts verbally and in writing.
• Positive social skills to facilitate interactions with a diverse range of parties.
• Excellent problem‑solving capabilities that drive effective critical thinking.
• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office, information security, scheduling and payroll systems, electronic medical documentation, and email.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
• Specialized field of study should be nursing.
• Current RN license.
• Must have BLS certification or obtain it within 30 days of starting in this role.
