Essential Duties

  • Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
  • Develop, maintain, and update written policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
  • Maintain current reference material at nurses' stations.
  • Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department.
  • Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
  • Evaluate nursing service personnel compliance with procedures.
  • Make reports and recommendations to the Director as needed.
  • Review and update departmental policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate nursing services with other resident services.
  • Ensure nursing service personnel comply with job descriptions.
  • Participate in facility surveys.
  • Review and update resident discharge plans.
  • Plan the nursing services portion of the resident's discharge plan.
  • Meet with nursing staff to plan services and activities.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
  • Complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
  • Interpret departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms.
  • Ensure compliance with privacy and security policies.
  • Report unauthorized attempts to access facility information.

Committee Functions

  • Attend various committee meetings.
  • Prepare written and/or oral reports for committees.
  • Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
  • Implement recommendations from established committees.

Personnel Functions

  • Ensure sufficient nursing and support staff are available.
  • Enroll nursing assistants in approved training programs.
  • Supervise nursing assistants under direct supervision of licensed nurses.
  • Monitor nursing staff performance and report problem areas.
  • Administer disciplinary actions fairly.
  • Report occupational exposures and fraud.
  • Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment.

Nursing Care Functions

  • Inform nursing staff of new admissions.
  • Greet and escort newly admitted residents.
  • Consult with residents, families, and physicians.
  • Notify physicians and next-of-kin of resident changes.
  • Monitor residents' physical and emotional status.
  • Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Administer medications and treatments.
  • Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness.
  • Monitor residents needing frequent checks.
  • Assist in developing and implementing corrective action.
  • Inform family members of resident deaths.

Staff Development

  • Develop and conduct in-service training classes.
  • Plan and schedule annual facility in-service training programs.
  • Supervise clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
  • Attend and participate in continuing education programs.

Safety and Sanitation

  • Develop safety standards for the nursing service department.
  • Evaluate and classify job-related tasks involving potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Train personnel on appropriate in-service programs.
  • Ensure availability and proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Monitor personnel compliance with safety regulations.
