Responsibilities

• Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing day-to-day nursing activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines governing long-term care facilities.
• Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
• Ensure reference materials (e.g., PDRs, regulations, professional standards) at nurses' stations are current and recommend additional materials to support department needs.
• Maintain and update the Nursing Service Procedures Manual to reflect current nursing procedures and ensure compliance.
• Report and make recommendations to the Director regarding nursing service operations, including revisions to policies, procedures, and job descriptions.
• Coordinate nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of care.
• Ensure nursing service personnel comply with their job descriptions and participate in the facility’s quality assurance program.
• Participate in facility surveys and inspections conducted by authorized government agencies.
• Review and update residents' written discharge plans as required and assist in planning the nursing services portion of discharge plans.
• Admit, transfer, and discharge residents, and complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
• Interpret department policies to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.
• Perform administrative duties, including completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting.
• Safeguard resident and facility information by not disclosing user IDs, passwords, or protected health information, and report any suspected violations.
• Attend and participate in facility committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment) and prepare reports as directed.
• Ensure sufficient licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, and certified nursing assistants are available to maintain quality care and meet residents' daily needs.
• Develop work assignments, delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses, and supervise nurse aide trainees.
• Monitor staffing levels, absenteeism, and compliance with policies, including dress codes, and report issues to the Director.
• Review complaints and grievances from department personnel and report findings to the Director.
• Foster a positive working environment and maintain good rapport with interdepartmental personnel.
• Conduct regular shift meetings to address and correct problem areas and improve services.
• Participate in employee performance evaluations, staffing assessments, and disciplinary actions without bias.
• Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals per facility policies.
• Inform nursing staff of new admissions, room assignments, and escort residents to their rooms.
• Make rounds with physicians, encourage timely documentation of progress notes and orders, and report delayed visits to the Director.
• Consult with residents, families, and physicians to plan care, treatment, and rehabilitation, and notify next of kin of changes in resident condition.
• Visit residents daily to observe and evaluate their physical and emotional status and ensure direct nursing care is provided by qualified personnel.
• Review nurses' notes to ensure they are informative, descriptive, and reflect residents' responses to care.
• Provide direct nursing care as necessary, including starting IVs, obtaining specimens, taking vitals, and administering medications and treatments.
• Monitor medication passes, treatment schedules, and medication cards for accuracy and compliance with policies.
• Maintain clean and safe nursing service areas, treatment rooms, and resident care rooms.
• Ensure residents unable to call for help are checked frequently and assist in arranging transportation for discharged residents.
• Participate in staff development by planning and conducting in-service training, assisting with annual training programs (e.g., OSHA, TB, HIPAA), and attending continuing education programs.
• Assist the Safety Officer in developing safety standards and ensure personnel follow established safety regulations.
• Identify and classify job-related functions with potential exposure to blood/body fluids and ensure personnel receive appropriate training.
• Ensure availability and proper use of personal protective equipment and compliance with handwashing and hygiene procedures.
• Participate in and ensure staff involvement in fire safety and disaster preparedness drills.
• Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining the facility’s safety and sanitation programs.
