Position Summary
Delivers nursing care in the Post-Operative Care Unit (PACU) to patients entering the postoperative phase of treatment. Responsible for assessing the patient’s condition and readiness for discharge.
Responsibilities
- Ensures that the PACU has a clean and therapeutic environment for all patients at all times
- Ensures supplies and equipment needed are available and in good working order
- Admits the patient to the unit and monitors recovery from anesthesia and surgical procedure
- Makes initial assessment and determines the nursing needs of the patient
- Follows and implements physician’s orders and performs all required nursing activities
- Explains nursing procedures and actions taken to help reduce anxiety
- Identifies patient’s physical and mental status
- Maintains established center/departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards
- Maintains department records, reports, and files as required
- Maintains and cares for department equipment and supplies
- Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings
- Maintains confidentiality of patient and center related business
- Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with patients, families, visitors and other center employees
- Documents concisely, precisely and accurately on all records or documents as indicated by policy
- Participates in Quality Assessment activities as directed for the continuous improvement of patient care and center business
- Understands and maintains clinical competencies (general, age specific and drug administration)
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing
- Current Registered Nurse licensure in the state of Oklahoma
- Current BLS certification; ACLS required within one year of employment
- Previous PACU experience required
Essential Functions
- Able to adequately assess, diagnose, plan and implement nursing interventions and evaluate patient condition
- Compliance with the attendance policy
- Compliance with continuing and mandatory education programs
- Possesses appropriate communication skills to practice collaborative nursing
- Able to respond quickly, physically and mentally when priorities and/or the patient’s condition changes

- Ability to understand and resolve simple to complex problems
- Ability to understand simple to complex instructions
- Ability to constantly walk, stand, and/or lift
- Ability to frequently utilize full range of motion, including crouching, stooping, reaching, bending and twisting
- Ability to frequently lift, pull, push with assistance of one other person, the weight of the average patient
- Ability to see and hear and distinguish color
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks
