Essential Duties

  • Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
  • Develop, maintain, and update written policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
  • Maintain current reference material at nurses’ stations.
  • Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department.
  • Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
  • Maintain compliance with nursing service personnel.
  • Make reports/recommendations to the Director as necessary.
  • Periodically review department policies and procedures.
  • Participate in facility surveys.
  • Review resident’s written discharge plan.
  • Plan the nursing services portion of the resident’s discharge plan.
  • Meet with nursing staff and support personnel.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
  • Complete accident/incident reports.
  • Interpret department policies and procedures.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms.
  • Ensure a sufficient number of licensed nurses and nursing assistants are available.
  • Ensure nursing assistants are enrolled in or have graduated from approved training programs.
  • Monitor nursing service personnel’s work assignments.
  • Report findings to the Director.
  • Monitor absenteeism.
  • Report problem areas to the Director.
  • Ensure policies and procedures are followed.
  • Review complaints and grievances.
  • Develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-department personnel.
  • Create and maintain a warm, personal, and positive environment.
  • Meet with shifts to identify and correct problem areas.
  • Evaluate department’s work force.
  • Participate in employee performance evaluations.
  • Administer fair disciplinary action.
  • Report occupational exposures.
  • Ensure proper logging off or activation of screen savers.

Committee Functions

  • Attend various committee meetings.
  • Prepare written and/or oral reports of nursing service programs and activities.
  • Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
  • Develop the agenda for Care Plan Committee meetings.
  • Review and update discharge plans.
  • Implement recommendations from established committees.

Nursing Care Functions

  • Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions.
  • Greet newly admitted residents.
  • Escort newly admitted residents to their rooms.
  • Consult with resident, family, and physician in planning care.
  • Notify attending physician and next-of-kin of resident’s condition changes.
  • Visit residents daily to observe and evaluate their status.
  • Ensure direct nursing care is provided by a licensed nurse, certified nursing assistant, or nurse aide trainee.
  • Review nurses’ notes.
  • Provide direct nursing care.
  • Start IVs, obtain specimens, take vital signs, etc.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents.
  • Report problem areas to the Director.
  • Assist in developing and implementing corrective action.
  • Keep the Director informed of resident status.
  • Monitor seriously ill residents.
  • Authorize the use of restraints.
  • Ensure proper medication administration and storage.
  • Inspect treatment areas daily.
  • Check frequently for residents unable to call for help.
  • Assist in arranging transportation for discharged residents.
  • Inform family members of resident’s death.
  • Call funeral homes as requested.

Staff Development

  • Develop, plan, conduct, and schedule in-service training classes.
  • Assist the In-service Director/Educator in developing annual facility in-service training programs.
  • Assist the Director in planning clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
  • Attend and participate in continuing education programs.

Safety and Sanitation

  • Develop safety standards for the nursing service department.
  • Evaluate and classify routine and job-related functions involving potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Ensure personnel participate in appropriate in-service training programs.
  • Ensure an adequate supply of personal protective equipment is available.
  • Monitor personnel’s adherence to safety regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensure proper cleaning and sanitation of work areas.
