Job Description
The Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) at UofL Health provides comprehensive nursing care to patients across various age groups, utilizing the nursing process and practice standards. They collaborate with the healthcare team, patients, and families to ensure safe, optimal care.
Essential Functions
- Conducts systematic assessments of patient health status, addressing all aspects of the individual and family, including age, gender, spiritual, cultural, physical, psychosocial, and patient preferences.
- Administers medications according to licensure authority, assessing and reassessing their effects, and documenting administration in accordance with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Plans care using current scientific knowledge, theory, and care standards, developing individualized, age-specific plans for optimal patient and family outcomes.
- Identifies and prioritizes patient problems based on assessment data, patient safety considerations, patient and family goals and preferences, and nursing interventions and the medical plan of care.
- Implements nursing care interventions to meet patient and family-centered health care needs, demonstrating competent skills, appropriate clinical judgments, and chain of command to promote patient safety.
- Teaches patients and families about their care, reflecting sensitivity to age, learning needs, and cultural background, and evaluates care outcomes.
- Serves as an advocate for the patient and family, demonstrating respect for their rights, responsibilities, and preferences, and prepares them for discharge.
- Collaborates with the healthcare team, unlicensed assistive healthcare providers, and other care team members to promote safe care delivery.
- Communicates effectively, resolves conflicts appropriately, and gives and receives peer review and feedback to improve practice.
- Maintains professional competency through continuing education, ongoing competency demonstration, licensure, and participation in evidence-based practice activities.

Education
- Associate’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program (required)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program (preferred)
Experience
- Two years of hospital patient care experience (preferred)
- All new RN graduates participate in the Nurse Residency program and must successfully complete all activities (required)
Licensure
- Current KY RN licensure or compact license with privileges to work in Kentucky (required)
Certification
- Basic Life Saving (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (may be required for specific clinical areas)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (may be required for specific clinical areas)
