About the Role

Join the MercyOne family as a Registered Nurse in our Medical/Surgical department. The registered nurse plans and provides professional nursing care to patients from admission to discharge, coordinating care with other disciplines, consulting with families or significant others, and collaborating with physicians. This role involves assessing, implementing, and evaluating nursing care in a 23 private-room unit that serves patients with diverse medical and surgical diagnoses, including congestive heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, pneumonia, diabetes, COPD, abdominal surgeries, total joint replacements, hospice, orthopedics, skilled rehabilitation, and infusion care.

The RN supervises Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) and Support Assistants and works weekend or night shifts as scheduled.

Responsibilities

• Administers nursing care to patients, including assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating the patient’s care plan in coordination with the physician.
• Provides patient, family, or caregiver education and counseling to address physical, emotional, and environmental health problems.
• Supervises health care team members, such as patient care technicians.
• Utilizes computer applications and communication technologies to enter, retrieve, and analyze information, facilitating communication and education.
• Maintains knowledge of documentation requirements for patients’ records.
• Works independently with limited direct supervision, adhering to the Nurse Practice Act, Mercy Medical Center policies, nursing standards, and professional judgment.
• Maintains knowledge of equipment set-up, maintenance, and use (e.g., IV pumps, monitoring equipment, drainage devices).
• Utilizes safeguards such as IV pump drug libraries and monitor alarms to maximize patient safety.
• Works rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.

Requirements

• Understands and applies the nursing process while meeting established Nursing Standards.
• Ability to read, write, and follow written and oral instructions in English.
• Proficient in operating computers efficiently.
• Skilled in meeting the growth and development needs of infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient groups.
• Knowledge and understanding of cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturation processes of these patient groups.
• Maintains BLS certification at the health care provider level and ACLS, as well as Mandatory Reporting certification.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Current license as a Registered Nurse from the State of Iowa.
• Nursing experience in a hospital setting preferred.
