5 South is a 33-bed medical unit with shared rooms, one negative-pressure room, and two single rooms for patients requiring privacy. The average census is 29–32 patients. The unit monitors patients needing frequent safety checks via a video monitoring system and can accept telemetry patients. The team provides patient- and family-centered care in coordination with multidisciplinary team members and is certified to perform peritoneal dialysis.

About the Role
The Registered Nurse (RN) operates under the ANA scope of practice, using the nursing process to deliver professional care that incorporates patient-family centered principles. The RN assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and discharges patients while partnering with families to set goals and develop teaching strategies. Under the direction of the Nurse Leader, the RN provides quality care according to Corewell Health policies and procedures, ensuring positive patient outcomes through effective nursing practices and patient/family collaboration.
Responsibilities
- Assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and discharge patients using patient-family centered care principles.
- Provide quality patient care under the direction of the Nurse Leader in accordance with Corewell Health policies.
- Partner with patients and families to incorporate their input and goals into the care plan.
- Develop and document teaching strategies for patient and family education.
- Recognize the impact of nursing care and patient/family partnerships on patient outcomes.
Qualifications
- Associate’s or Diploma in Nursing from an ACEN-accredited program (required).
- Bachelor’s in Nursing required within 5 years for Graduate Nurses (GN) or RNs with less than 1 year of experience.
- Graduates from non-accredited nursing schools must have at least one year of acute care experience or two years of experience in a licensed healthcare role and must have passed the NCLEX.
- External candidates must have a minimum of 2 years of related acute care experience and successfully complete a competency assessment.
- Internal candidates with less than 2 years of clinical experience must be approved by their current Nurse Manager and the site CNO and remain a unit-based PRN (casual) employee until reaching 2 years of experience.
- Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license (required).
- American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required upon hire).
