Responsibilities

  • Absorbs primary responsibility for the plan of care for a patient or group of patients, adhering to unit standards and required nursing care for the specified patient population.
  • Effectively delegates tasks and responsibilities to other healthcare team members and takes responsibility for follow-up and collaboration.
  • Conducts admission assessment processes according to specific department standards, including patient history, physical, and psycho-social assessments. Utilizes this data, diagnostic information, pharmacological details, and patient/family perceptions to formulate nursing diagnoses related to focus problem areas and establish care goals.
  • Develops a plan of care collaboratively with patients and families, reviewing each shift to ensure priorities are met.
  • Enacts the plan of care using current standards of nursing practice, evidence-based practices, and hospital protocols/procedures. Integrates a multidisciplinary approach to ensure patient comfort, support human functions, and maintain a safe environment.
  • Administers medications and nursing treatments within the scope of practice, integrating the St. Luke’s Comfort/C.A.R.E. Professional Practice Model into daily care.
  • Assesses and selects teaching strategies suitable for the patient’s and their families’ age-specific needs, cultural background, readiness to learn, and comprehension levels. Consults relevant hospital resources to provide specialized education.
  • Demonstrates awareness of patient and workplace safety, preventing errors, accidents, and infections while promptly reporting any concerns.
  • Incorporates patient/family teaching throughout the hospitalization, including the plan and goals of care, pre- and post-operative procedures, diagnostic procedures, and discharge teaching. Incorporates preventative health maintenance into the education plan.
  • Supports new associates by serving as a resource and mentor, collaborating with unit leadership, and participating in the education experiences of students and RN interns.
  • Promotes professional development and involvement in nursing practice through networking and research. Engages in department and hospital shared governance activities and performance improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Current RN licensure in the State of Iowa or a compact state.
  • Maintain a current BLS certification.
  • Fluent in English, writes, reads, and comprehends fluently.
  • Demonstrate multicultural sensitivity.
  • Show proficiency in performing basic/advanced nursing procedures and operating specialized equipment.
  • Complete a basic computer course on the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) through in-hospital training.
