About the Role

Collaborates with the medical and nursing staff in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation care and education. Provides specialized nursing care and education to lactating patients. Participates in the educational growth and development of nursing staff regarding lactation issues. Responsible for competency validation, consultation, and research. Works in a Staff Nurse capacity as needed. Accountable to the North Carolina Board of Nursing for practicing within the scope of the North Carolina Nursing Practice Act.

Responsibilities

  • Performs patient assessments and analyzes data to determine diagnoses or issues.
  • Identifies expected outcomes; formulates and documents individualized plans of care for assigned patients.
  • Implements and evaluates patient care based on age appropriateness.
  • Serves as a resource and consultant for lactation care problems, concepts, methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Provides patient and/or family instruction and education relevant to the patient’s condition; serves as the primary educator for patients requiring specialized lactation care.
  • Interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers and colleagues; assists with orienting and training other nursing employees and students.
  • Attains knowledge and competency reflecting current nursing practice.
  • Sets up, operates, and/or maintains equipment and work areas.
  • Communicates with patients or their representatives to ensure concerns and wishes regarding care are addressed and shared with pertinent care providers.
  • Establishes, plans, and reviews policies, standards, procedures, and goals related to lactation care and education.
  • Monitors lactation care and education provided by nursing staff for adequacy and appropriateness.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties to support unit operations and the provision of care.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in nursing; graduate of an approved nursing program.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in North Carolina.
  • BCLS Certification (recertification required every 2 years).
  • IBCLC Certification (within 6 months of start date).
  • Certified by the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultant Examiners.
  • Completion of a Breastfeeding Educator Course and certification within one year of employment.
  • 3 years of Registered Nurse experience in healthcare/medical settings.
  • Substantial nursing experience in a specialty or sub-specialty preferred.
