About the role

Provides quality patient-centered care considering age-specific, developmental, and cultural needs. The unit includes 12 LDRs, 4 High-Risk Rooms, 7 Bed Triage Areas, 6 Antepartum Rooms, 3 C-Section Rooms, and 4 Bed PACU. All patient rooms are private.

The treatment team consists of RNs, Surgical Technicians, Patient Care Technicians, and Unit Clerks, all located on the unit. The team is supported by 24/7 in-house providers including Obstetricians, Midwives, OB Residents, Pediatricians, Neonatologists, Anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists.

A 13-week orientation OB Core Course is required (provided as part of orientation). Full-time and part-time team members are required to work every other weekend and every other holiday per year.

Responsibilities

  • Gathers and analyzes patient information
  • Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises an individualized plan of care
  • Uses teach-back methodology to educate patients and families
  • Actively seeks to prevent potential hospital-acquired conditions
  • Effectively communicates patient status, priority goals, and interventions during consultations, rounds, and handoffs
  • Follows all HIPAA policies and procedures
  • Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Mercy Hospitals

Requirements

  • Graduation from a school of nursing that qualifies the graduate to sit for the NCLEX exam to become licensed as a Registered Nurse
  • BSN preferred; new hires after January 1, 2013, must have a BSN or agree in writing to obtain one within five years of hire
  • Current State of Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) License
  • BLS certification
  • ACLS certification required for Float Pool, Cardiac/Cath Lab, AICU, and Emergency departments
  • New graduate nurses must have licensure examination scheduled within 45 days of hire
  • Experienced Canadian Registered Nurses are encouraged to apply
  • Knowledge of nursing theory, practice, and age-specific needs
  • Interpersonal skills to initiate and maintain collegial relationships with coworkers and therapeutic relationships with patients and families
  • Critical thinking skills to perform principal duties and responsibilities
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when planning and performing professional nursing care
