Job Summary

Provides direct patient care in the Labor and Delivery setting. Provides assessment and planning for individualized patient care. Communicates with physicians about changes in patient’s clinical condition including fetal monitoring and results of diagnostic studies. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Performs general nursing duties in all Maternal-Child Health departments with adequate supervision. Participates in performance improvement activities.

Able to Assess Neonate at Delivery and Perform Neonatal Resuscitation

  • Absorbs neonate at delivery and performs neonatal resuscitation according to AHA/AAP guidelines.
  • Conducts antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum assessments.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of fetal monitoring.
  • Identifies FHR patterns and treats appropriately.
  • Absesses presenting part by Leopold Maneuver and/or digital exam.
  • Absesses fetal cardiac activity with ultrasound transducer and contraction activity with Toco transducer.
  • Absesses and reassesses pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques.
  • Edutes the patient and family regarding pain management.

Assists Physicians with Procedures and Performs Services

  • Absists physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.
  • Absists physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.

Interacts Professionally with Patient/Family and Involves Them in Plan of Care

  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Functs as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.

Knowledge of Medications and Correct Administration Based on Age of Patient

  • Knows medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
  • Follows the seven (7) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.

Educates Patients and Families Regarding Pain Management

  • Edutes the patient and family regarding pain management.

Documents Care According to Standards and Policies

  • Documentation meets current standards and policies.

Maintains Equipment Safely and Operates It Correctly

  • Maintains and operates equipment safely and correctly.

Coordinates and Supervises Patient Care

  • Coordinates and supervises patient care as necessary.

Communicates Appropriately and Clearly

  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to Nurse Manager, co-workers and physicians.

  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.

Physical Demands

  • Mobility, sight, hearing, verbal communication, changes in temperature, exposure to disagreeable elements, exposure to biological, mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards.
  • Frequent standing and walking.
  • Lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Carrying up to 40 pounds.
  • Pushing/pulling up to 450 pounds.
