Job Summary

Provides direct patient care in the Labor and Delivery setting. Provides assessment and planning for individualized patient care. Communicates with physicians about changes in patient’s clinical condition including fetal monitoring and results of diagnostic studies. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Performs general nursing duties in all Maternal-Child Health departments with adequate supervision. Participates in performance improvement activities.

Able to Assess Neonate at Delivery and Perform Neonatal Resuscitation

  • Absolutely assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation according to AHA/AAP guidelines.
  • Conducts antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum assessments.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of fetal monitoring.
  • Identifies FHR patterns and treats appropriately.
  • Absolutely assess presenting part by Leopold Maneuver and/or digital exam.
  • Absolutely assess fetal cardiac activity with ultrasound transducer and contraction activity with Toco transducer.
  • Absolutely assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques.
  • Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.

Assists Physicians with Procedures and Performs Services Requiring Technical and Manual Skills

  • Absolutely assists physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.
  • Absolutely performs treatments and provides services to level licensure.

Treats Patients and Their Families with Respect and Dignity

  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.

Knowledge of Medications and Correct Administration Based on Age of Patient

  • Knows medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
  • Follows the seven (7) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.

Formulates a Teaching Plan Based Upon Identified Learning Needs and Evaluates Effectiveness of Learning

  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning, family is included in teaching as appropriate.

Documents Care in Compliance with Standards and Policies

  • Documentation meets current standards and policies.

Maintains and Operates Equipment Safely and Correctly

  • Maintains and operates equipment safely and correctly.

Coordinates and Supervises Patient Care as Necessary

  • Coordinates and supervises patient care as necessary.

Physical Demands

  • Mobile, sight, hearing, verbal communication, changes in temperature, exposure to disagreeable elements, exposure to biological, mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards.
  • Frequent standing and walking.
  • Lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Carries up to 40 pounds.
  • Pushes/pulls up to 450 pounds.
