About the Role

The Labor, Delivery, Recovery & Postpartum (LDRP) Clinical Registered Nurse applies scientific knowledge from social, biological, and physical sciences using the nursing process. This role helps patients cope with difficulties related to health or illness and requires substantial scientific knowledge and technical skill. The position reports to the Clinical Unit Supervisor (CUS) of Perinatal Services and involves 12-hour accountability for patient care delivery. The role supports Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Healthcare’s (MLKCH) mission, vision, and core values, as well as its strategic and quality improvement goals.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate and maintain competencies, qualifications, attitudes, behaviors, and skills required for the LDRP Clinical Registered Nurse role.
• Collaborate and demonstrate teamwork in all interactions.
• Follow directives from the CUS, Nurse Manager, and Senior Director per the chain of command.
• Maintain understanding of perinatal evidence-based practices and adhere to MLKCH policies and procedures.
• Assist with laboring patients, cesarean and vaginal births, immediate newborn care, and maternal/infant assessments.
• Develop and maintain a therapeutic nurse/patient relationship throughout the healthcare continuum.
• Respect patient rights and uphold MLKCH values and mission.
• Use SBAR communications for emergencies, endorsements of care, and routine bedside hand-off reports.
• Recognize, evaluate, respond, and communicate appropriately during maternal, neonatal emergencies, or unusual situations.
• Adhere to Baby-Friendly model of care standards.
• Perform documentation of patient care, including assessment, interdisciplinary plan of care (IPOC), implementation, evaluation, education, and discharge.
• Formulate nursing diagnoses through observation and interpretation of patient information.
• Collaborate with patients to formulate care plans ensuring safety, comfort, hygiene, and restorative measures.
• Perform essential nursing skills, explain treatments to patients and families, and teach self-care techniques.
• Provide direct and indirect patient care, including administering medications and therapeutic agents as ordered by physicians.
• Delegate tasks to subordinates based on legal scopes of practice and supervise their work effectively.
• Evaluate care plan effectiveness through observation and communication with patients and healthcare team members.
• Observe and assess signs, symptoms, and reactions to treatment, and take appropriate action.
• Act as the patient’s advocate by initiating actions to improve care or change decisions against the patient’s interests.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; individuals hired without a BSN must complete the degree within 5 years of hire.
• Minimum of one (1) year of clinical nursing experience in Labor and Delivery and Postpartum nursing.
• Nursery and/or NICU experience preferred.
• Current California Nursing license.
• Certification in a related nursing specialty preferred.

Skills

• Bilingual skills preferred (Spanish).
• Basic computer skills.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS).
• Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
• Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
• Familiarity with MLKCH video systems.
