13-week assignment in Milwaukee, WI (53215-4330) – 12-hour night shifts (1900-0700), 36 hours per week. Clinical interview required; manager makes final decision.

About the Facility

Level III Trauma Center, Magnet Designated, Comprehensive Stroke Center with 933 total beds. The ICU unit has 27 beds and averages 25 patients per day.

Responsibilities

  • Care for neurocritical patients: ischemic strokes (post TNK, thrombectomies), hemorrhagic strokes (SAH, IPH, IVH, SDH), seizures, spinal surgeries, brain mass resections/biopsies, and other neuro-intensive conditions
  • Manage non-neuro ICU patients: medical respiratory overflow, general medical ICU overflow
  • Handle mixed acuity with patient ratios of 1:1-2 or 1:3
  • Float to any of the following as needed:
    • ED Holding (board patients waiting for an inpatient bed) – ratio 1:3-4
    • Other ICUs (MRICU, SICU, CICU, CVICU)
    • Medical-surgical unit – ratio 1:3
    • Sitter assignments
    • PACU Surge – ratio 1:3-4
  • Manage vents, trachs, arterial lines, vasopressors, sedation, and central line blood draws
  • Operate EPIC EMR, Alaris IV pumps, Pyxis medication dispensing systems, and bedside telemetry
  • Work every other weekend and every other holiday

Requirements

  • Active RN license
  • BLS and ACLS certifications
  • NIHSS certification
  • Minimum 4 years of ICU experience
  • EPIC experience required
  • Experience with vents, trachs, art lines, vasopressor/sedation management, and central line blood draws

Preferred Qualifications

  • CVVH/CRRT experience
  • EVD management experience

Unit Details

  • Support staff:
    • CNA with ratio 1:8-10
    • Charge RN (rarely takes patient assignment)
    • 2 Critical Care NPs on days
    • Intensivist 24/7 (2 on days, 1 on nights)
    • Hospitalist 24/7
    • RT 24/7
    • Phlebotomy available for peripheral blood draws
  • Orientation: 1 shift of NEO (new employee orientation) plus 1 shift of unit orientation
  • Scrub policy: Any solid color; no graphics, logos, or designs
  • Parking: Free
  • Unit culture: Strong teamwork with focus on evidence-based nursing practice
  • Fatigue policy: Staff (including travelers) cannot work more than 60 hours in a week or 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts

Schedule

  • 12-hour night shifts (1900-0700)
  • 6-week schedule increments
  • Every other weekend rotation
  • Every other holiday worked
  • No on-call or callback requirements
  • Time-off requests: up to 7 days can be approved by the interviewing team
