Essential Duties

  • Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
  • Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that reference material at nurses' stations is current.
  • Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department.
  • Ensure the Nursing Service Procedures Manual is current and reflective of daily nursing procedures.
  • Ensure all nursing service personnel comply with the procedures in the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
  • Make written and oral reports to the Director as necessary.
  • Periodically review department policies, procedure manuals, job descriptions, etc.
  • Make recommendations for revisions to the Director.
  • Coordinate nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of care.
  • Adequately staff the nursing service department to ensure quality care.
  • Ensure a sufficient number of certified nursing assistants are available.
  • Develop work assignments and assist in completing tasks.
  • Delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses.
  • Ensure nursing assistants are enrolled in or have graduated from approved training programs.
  • Monitor attendance and report problem areas to the Director.
  • Maintain departmental policies and procedures, including dress codes.
  • Review and address complaints and grievances.
  • Create and maintain a positive and supportive environment.
  • Meet with shifts regularly to identify and correct issues.
  • Evaluate departmental work force and make recommendations to the Director.
  • Administer fair disciplinary actions.
  • Report occupational exposures and suspected incidents of fraud.
  • Ensure proper use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
  • Monitor personnel following safety regulations.

Committee Functions

  • Attend various committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment).
  • Prepare written and/or oral reports of nursing service programs and activities.
  • Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
  • Develop the agenda for Care Plan Committee meetings.
  • Review and update discharge plans as required.
  • Implement recommendations from established committees.

Nursing Care Functions

  • Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions and prepare rooms.
  • Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
  • Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
  • Inform the Director of delayed physician visits.
  • Consult with residents, families, and physicians about care plans.
  • Notify the Director of resident condition changes.
  • Visit residents daily to assess their physical and emotional status.
  • Ensure direct nursing care is provided by licensed nurses, CNAs, or trainees.
  • Review nurses' notes for accuracy and compliance.
  • Provide direct nursing care as needed.
  • Administer IVs, collect specimens, take vital signs, etc.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as necessary.
  • Report problem areas to the Director.
  • Assist in developing and implementing corrective action.
  • Keep the Director informed of resident status.
  • Monitor seriously ill residents.
  • Authorize the use of restraints.
  • Ensure proper medication administration and storage.
  • Inspect treatment areas daily.
  • Check frequently for residents unable to call for help.
  • Communicate with family members regarding resident deaths.
  • Arrange transportation for discharged residents.

Staff Development

  • Develop and conduct in-service training classes.
  • Plan and schedule annual facility in-service training programs.
  • Supervise clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
  • Attend and participate in continuing education programs.

Safety and Sanitation

  • Develop safety standards for the nursing service department.
  • Evaluate and classify routine and job-related tasks involving potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Train personnel on appropriate in-service programs before performing tasks involving exposure.
  • Maintain an adequate supply of personal protective equipment.
  • Monitor personnel following safety regulations.
