Essential Duties
- Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
- Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures.
- Ensure that reference material at nurses' stations is current.
- Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department.
- Ensure the Nursing Service Procedures Manual is current and reflective of daily nursing procedures.
- Ensure all nursing service personnel comply with the procedures in the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
- Make written and oral reports to the Director as necessary.
- Periodically review department policies, procedure manuals, job descriptions, etc.
- Make recommendations for revisions to the Director.
- Coordinate nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of care.
- Adequately staff the nursing service department to ensure quality care.
- Ensure a sufficient number of certified nursing assistants are available.
- Develop work assignments and assist in completing tasks.
- Delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses.
- Ensure nursing assistants are enrolled in or have graduated from approved training programs.
- Monitor attendance and report problem areas to the Director.
- Maintain departmental policies and procedures, including dress codes.
- Review and address complaints and grievances.
- Create and maintain a positive and supportive environment.
- Meet with shifts regularly to identify and correct issues.
- Evaluate departmental work force and make recommendations to the Director.
- Administer fair disciplinary actions.
- Report occupational exposures and suspected incidents of fraud.
- Ensure proper use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
- Monitor personnel following safety regulations.
Committee Functions
- Attend various committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment).
- Prepare written and/or oral reports of nursing service programs and activities.
- Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
- Develop the agenda for Care Plan Committee meetings.
- Review and update discharge plans as required.
- Implement recommendations from established committees.
Nursing Care Functions
- Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions and prepare rooms.
- Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
- Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
- Inform the Director of delayed physician visits.
- Consult with residents, families, and physicians about care plans.
- Notify the Director of resident condition changes.
- Visit residents daily to assess their physical and emotional status.
- Ensure direct nursing care is provided by licensed nurses, CNAs, or trainees.
- Review nurses' notes for accuracy and compliance.
- Provide direct nursing care as needed.
- Administer IVs, collect specimens, take vital signs, etc.
- Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as necessary.
- Report problem areas to the Director.
- Assist in developing and implementing corrective action.
- Keep the Director informed of resident status.
- Monitor seriously ill residents.
- Authorize the use of restraints.
- Ensure proper medication administration and storage.
- Inspect treatment areas daily.
- Check frequently for residents unable to call for help.
- Communicate with family members regarding resident deaths.
- Arrange transportation for discharged residents.
Staff Development
- Develop and conduct in-service training classes.
- Plan and schedule annual facility in-service training programs.
- Supervise clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
Safety and Sanitation
- Develop safety standards for the nursing service department.
- Evaluate and classify routine and job-related tasks involving potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
- Train personnel on appropriate in-service programs before performing tasks involving exposure.
- Maintain an adequate supply of personal protective equipment.
- Monitor personnel following safety regulations.
