About the Role
Join Watertown Regional Medical Center, an acute-care hospital in southeastern Wisconsin recognized for high-quality care with national awards from Becker's Hospital Review, Chartis, Healthgrades, The Leapfrog Group, and ScionHealth. This full-time Registered Nurse (RN) position is on the Med/Surg team, working 36 hours per week from 1900 to 0700, with weekend and holiday rotation.
Responsibilities
- Provide planning and delivery of direct and indirect patient care through the nursing process of Assessment, Planning, Intervention, and Evaluation.
- Develop nursing care plans in coordination with patient, family, and interdisciplinary staff as necessary.
- Communicate changes in patient’s clinical condition with physicians, nursing supervisor/manager, and co-workers as appropriate.
- Participate in the discharge planning process.
- Maintain the standard of nursing care and implement policies and procedures of the hospital and nursing department.
- Direct, supervise, provide, and evaluate nursing care provided to patients.
- Assign or delegate tasks based on patient needs, potential for harm, complexity of the task, and within the scope of practice of the staff.
- Document patient admission assessment, reassessments, care plans, and other pertinent information in the patient’s medical record according to nursing standards and policies.
- Perform assessments on all patients on admission and reassessments as per policy; make referrals to other disciplines based on assessment.
- Develop and update nursing care plans, ensuring coordination with patient, family, and team members.
- Assess and reassess pain, utilizing appropriate pain management techniques and educating the patient and family regarding pain management.
- Revise the plan of care as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate the overall plan daily for effectiveness.
- Perform patient care considering age-specific needs and administer medication utilizing the five rights of medication administration.
- Receive and transcribe physician’s orders accurately, ensuring documentation and completion.
- Formulate and evaluate teaching plans based on identified learning needs, including family in teaching as appropriate.
- Assist physicians with examinations, treatments, and special procedures; perform services within the scope of practice.
- Treat patients and families with respect and dignity, addressing psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and spiritual needs.
- Act as a liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
- Interpret patient data to identify age-specific needs and provide appropriate care.
- Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes safety and reduces the likelihood of errors.
- Initiate or assist with emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patients’ conditions.
- Answer telephones, paging systems, call lights, anticipate patient needs, and make rounds of assigned patients.
- Consult other departments to provide an interdisciplinary approach to patient care.
- Provide end-of-shift reports, ensure narcotics are counted, documentation is complete, and physician orders are signed off.
- Communicate appropriately and clearly with management, co-workers, and physicians.
- Identify and address psychosocial needs of patients and families; coordinate with Social Service/Discharge Planner for in-hospital and post-discharge needs.
- Participate in the orientation, instruction, and training of new personnel.
- Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly.
- Serve on hospital committees as assigned.
- Perform and record chart audits as assigned.
- Maintain accurate cycle counts of narcotics and check/log crash carts, ensuring equipment functionality and medication/supply integrity.
- Report discrepancies in crash carts to pharmacy, director, and RL solution.
- Perform daily briefs, debriefs, and huddles according to facility/policy standards.
- Participate in IDT rounds daily and coordinate the presence of staff nurses at the bedside.
- Assign nursing care to rapid response and code teams based on capabilities and qualifications.
- Report unexpected events by entering RL solutions and attaching related documentation.
Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Associate Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma program.
- Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse.
- BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP certifications required; de-escalation training required.
- Minimum six months’ Medical/Surgical experience in an acute care setting preferred.
Skills
- Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on patient age and clinical condition.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Able to organize tasks, develop action plans, set priorities, and function in stressful situations.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships within and across departments.
- Must read, write, and speak fluent English.
- Good and regular attendance required.
