About the Role
Functions as the first assistant to the operating surgeon during the operative procedure and provides comprehensive nursing management of care during the peri-operative phase. Does not concurrently function as the scrub nurse.
Requirements
- Current NYS registration as a Registered Professional Nurse
- American Heart Association-Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required upon hire and must be maintained thereafter
- Bachelor’s Degree (BS/BA) in Nursing; if absent upon hire or transfer, must be obtained within three years (exceptions apply for employees hired prior to 7/2009 or between 7/2009–8/31/2013 with specialty certification)
- Current CNOR certification required upon hire and must remain active
- Successful completion of an RN First Assistant (RNFA) course and internship meeting AORN Standards, including:
- Minimum 3 semester credit-hour didactic component
- Minimum 3 semester credit-hour clinical component
- Program must be associated with an accredited nursing program or institution recognized by the US Department of Education
Experience
- Two (2) years of clinical experience in the operating room (OR) preferred
- For RNFA: 2 years of OR experience required and graduation from an accredited program
- Three (3) years of diversified perioperative nursing experience, including both scrubbing and circulating
- RNFA experience or RNFA clinical internship experience within the past three (3) years preferred

Pay

- Salary range: $52.60 – $63.66 per hour
- Wage determined based on candidate’s experience, qualifications, internal equity, and applicable collective bargaining agreement
