Job Summary

The Emergency Department RN provides direct and indirect patient care in the emergency care setting. They provide care that reflects initiative, flexibility, and responsibility indicative of professional expectation with minimum supervision. The RN also triages every patient that enters the emergency care system safely, rapidly, and accurately.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Able to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy.
  • Uses triage process to ensure timely and appropriate care to patients. Accurately assigns triage categories.
  • Able to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
  • Maintains current knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and his/her clinical condition. Follows the seven (7) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Prepares, hangs, monitors and discontinues IV fluids. Maintains accurate and continued nursing documentation including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses and assessment of changes.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family. Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection prevention and control standards. Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment. Assists in cost containment through appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality. Participates in performance improvement activities. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for own professional practice and ongoing education.
  • Completes annual education requirements. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with up to six (6) months registered nurse experience.
  • Current RN license in Idaho.
  • Current BLS Certification.
  • ACLS Certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • PALS Certification within one (1) year of hire.
  • TNCC Certification (Trauma Nurse Core Course) preferred.
  • ENPC Certification (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course) preferred.
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish and English) preferred.

Skills/Competencies

  • Read, write, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos in English.
  • Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form and deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
