About the Role
The Emergency Department Registered Nurse is specially trained to provide prompt response and treatment for patients with life-threatening, emergent, or urgent medical needs. This role involves operating monitoring and therapeutic equipment to deliver specialized nursing care to acute or complex patients. You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans, ensuring coordination across disciplines, physicians, and support staff. The position requires ongoing assessment, intervention, and advocacy for patients throughout their care continuum, including reevaluating patient responses, outcomes, and discharge readiness.
Additionally, you will serve as a role model and mentor to new graduate nurses, orientees, and support staff.
Responsibilities
- Professional Clinical Practice:
- Provide patient care, administer medications (including intravenous titrations), manage invasive and arterial lines, cardiac monitoring, ventilator management, and perform treatments/procedures safely and in an age-appropriate manner.
- Recognize changes in patient clinical conditions, take appropriate action, and document interventions.
- Respond to Rapid Response Team (RRT), Code Blues, and Code Whites as assigned.
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to intervene and advocate for patients as necessary.
- Intervene in instances of abuse, assault, or neglect, and make referrals to resolve patient issues (e.g., financial or social resource gaps).
- Plan of Care:
- Develop long- and short-term goals aligned with treatment plans, standards of practice, and patient preferences.
- Utilize pain management resources and other interventions to provide pain relief.
- Conduct ongoing assessments and document the patient’s physical and psychosocial condition, as well as their response to care.
- Review patient test results, identify critical results, and communicate them in a timely manner, correlating findings into the plan of care.
- Ensure nursing practice is evidence-based, within scope of licensure, and compliant with hospital-wide standards, including core measures, infection control, and HIPAA.
- Collaboration:
- Collaborate with staff, physicians, and healthcare team members to coordinate care and improve emergency department throughput.
- Supervise, monitor, and delegate patient care activities to appropriate team members, ensuring safe and high-quality care.
- Act as a resource, providing guidance, education, and information about treatment plans, care plans, and medications.
- Develop and implement accurate teaching and ongoing discharge plans.
- Communication:
- Demonstrate empathy and compassion toward patients and their support systems, tailoring care to age, cultural, religious, gender identity, or ethnic background.
- Engage in caring behaviors, taking ownership of interactions with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers.
Requirements
- Active, current, and unencumbered California Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
- AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
- Ability to work variable shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to maintain flexibility and composure in a constantly changing environment.
- Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card (required for Los Angeles City Employees only).
- AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
- One year of previous emergency nursing experience or completion of an emergency department training course (including EMTALA and ESI 5-level triage within the first six months of employment).
- De-escalation certification upon hire; SAMA Certification required upon recertification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families.
- SAMA Certification upon hire.
- Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN).

Pay
$64.17 per hour (minimum and maximum rate).
