Responsibilities
- Absorbs primary responsibility for the plan of care for a patient or group of patients, adhering to unit standards and required nursing care for the specified patient population.
- Effectively delegates tasks and responsibilities to other healthcare team members and takes full responsibility for follow-up and collaboration.
- Conducts admission assessment processes in line with specific department standards, including gathering patient history, physical, and psychosocial assessments. Utilizes this data along with diagnostic information, pharmacological insights, and patient/family perceptions to formulate nursing diagnoses related to focus problem areas and set care goals.
- Develops a care plan collaboratively with the patient and family, reviewing priorities each shift. Implements the plan according to current nursing standards, evidence-based practices, and hospital protocols.
- Administers medications and nursing treatments within the scope of practice, integrating the St. Luke’s Comfort/C.A.R.E. Professional Practice Model into daily care.
- Assesses and selects appropriate teaching methods for patients and their families based on age, cultural background, readiness to learn, and comprehension levels. Consults relevant hospital resources for specialized education.
- Promotes patient and workplace safety by preventing errors, accidents, and infections, and promptly reporting any concerns.
- Integrates patient/family teaching throughout the hospital stay, covering topics such as the plan and goals of care, pre- and post-operative procedures, diagnostic procedures, and discharge teaching. Incorporates preventative health maintenance into the education plan.
- Supports new associates by serving as a resource and mentor, participating in their orientation and acting as a preceptor when necessary. Engages in ongoing professional development and involvement in nursing activities that enhance practice.
- Participates in department and hospital governance activities and performance improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Iowa or a compact state.
- Maintains current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Displays proficiency in performing basic/advanced nursing procedures and operating specialized equipment.
- Completes a basic computer course on the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) through in-hospital training.
