About the role

The Diagnostic Imaging Nurse is a registered professional nurse responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and image-guided invasive procedures within Interventional Radiology (IR) and as needed in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab).

Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive pre-procedure assessments, including review of medical history, allergies, medications, lab results, and NPO status.
  • Verifies informed consent and ensures completion of required pre-procedural documentation.
  • Initiates and maintains intravenous (IV) access, including administration of fluids, medications, and contrast adjuncts per provider order.
  • Provides patient and family education regarding procedures, risks, sedation, and post-care expectations.
  • Ensures adherence to patient identification, time-out, and safety protocols.
  • Assists physicians during invasive and image-guided procedures (e.g., biopsies, drain placements, vascular access procedures, embolization support).
  • Prepares and maintains sterile field; assists with instrumentation and supplies during procedures.
  • Performs patient monitoring throughout procedures, including ECG, SpO₂, blood pressure, and level of consciousness.
  • Recognizes and responds to changes in patient condition and procedural complications.
  • Documents procedural events, medications, and patient responses accurately in the medical record.
  • Administers moderate sedation in accordance with hospital policy, regulatory standards, and provider orders.
  • Completes required pre-sedation assessments and risk stratification. Continuously monitors patient status during sedation and recovery, including airway, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological status.
  • Maintains competency in sedation protocols, reversal agents, and emergency interventions.
  • Ensures appropriate recovery and discharge criteria are met.
  • Provides post-procedure monitoring, including assessment of puncture sites, hemodynamic stability, and recovery from sedation.
  • Identifies and manages complications such as bleeding, hematoma, contrast reaction, or adverse sedation effects.
  • Provides discharge instructions and patient education as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with the Imaging Resource Coordinator – RN to support daily workflow, patient throughput, and coordination of Imaging and procedural services.
  • Serves as a clinical backup to the Imaging Resource Coordinator – RN, assisting with patient flow management, scheduling coordination, and prioritization of urgent and emergent procedures as needed.
  • Supports communication between providers, nursing units, technologists, and ancillary departments to optimize patient care and procedural readiness.
  • Assists with resolving workflow issues, patient delays, and operational barriers in collaboration with the Imaging Resource Coordinator – RN and departmental leadership.
  • Promotes a team-based approach to care delivery, ensuring continuity and consistency across Interventional Radiology and Cath Lab services.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (Associate or Bachelor’s degree required; BSN preferred) or eNCL.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Georgia – required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support (PALS) – required.
  • Moderate Sedation competency – required (or obtained within defined timeframe).
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of nursing experience in one or more of the following: o Critical Care (ICU) o Emergency Department o Interventional Radiology o Cardiac Cath Lab or procedural setting.
  • Experience with moderate sedation and invasive procedures preferred.
