RN, Clinical Staff Leader - C/W5-OB/GYN - Nights
About the role
The Clinical Staff Leader is a registered professional nurse employed by Erlanger Health System and is responsible for the practice of nursing according to the rules and regulations defined by the state's Nurse Practice Act, Erlanger's Models of Care/Practice, policies and procedures. The nurse is responsible for the delivery of patient care as assigned and for the supervision of other qualified staff to whom the nurse has delegated patient care in the exercise of his/her independent judgement. The nurse addresses physical, spiritual, emotional, and educational needs of the patient and coordinates the plan of care with other healthcare professionals. The nurse is responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position. In addition, the nurse conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission, Vision, and Values of Erlanger Health System.
Responsibilities
- Managing all aspects of nursing responsibilities during each shift, including delegating nursing assignments, preparing schedules and staff assignments.
- Overseeing patient flow to ensure patient acuity, clinical needs and prioritization of patient care.
- Assisting with clinical care to support departmental functions, as needed.
- Maintaining continuous updates to Visual Management Board.
- Ensuring bedside reporting occurs daily.
- Accounting for HCAHPs initiatives implementation.
- Executing and ensuring adherence to appropriate bundles for CLABSI, CAUTI, etc.
- Ensuring Hand Hygiene is completed 'wash in and wash out', and bare below the elbows in clinical areas.
- Participating in and leading committees and quality initiatives.
- Maintaining the area according to established standards and guidelines at all times.
- Accounting for regulatory compliance and escalating problems relating to rules and regulations in a timely and effective manner.
- Enforcing hourly rounding and bedside shift report.
- De-escalating situations and implementing service recovery.
- Tracking progress in meeting unit-specific metrics and goals.
- Assisting in recruitment and retention of staff on the unit.
- Assisting with onboarding of new staff to the department.
- Identifying and monitoring staff to develop as Clinical Staff Leaders.
- Facilitating open and effective communication with ancillary departments and medical staff.
- Communicating areas of concern appropriately to leadership and actively identifying solutions for correction.
- Delegating tasks based on the skill level of individuals.
- Identifying clinical staff leaders and developing plans of action to assist in their growth.
- Coaching and counseling staff to enhance performance.
- Conducting performance reviews in collaboration with department management.
- Collaborating with Director/Manager to facilitate monthly staff meetings.
- Facilitating appropriate orientation opportunities/experiences for new staff.
- Identifying all education opportunities for self and staff members.
- Assisting in the development of staff members by continuously reviewing the care they provide and offering constructive feedback.
- Managing productivity by flexing staffing based on census and acuity.
- Analyzing adequate staffing for the shift and next 24 hours.
- Monitoring supply cost to maintain within budget.
- Adhering to established PAR levels.
- Responsibly for timely patient placement according to department matrix.
- Completing Kronos per guidelines.
- Updating daily schedule timely to reflect actual staffing.
- Monitoring time and attendance and taking corrective action with staff not adhering to policy.
- Communicating effectively with all healthcare providers and service lines.
- Assisting with community outreach programs and opportunities (e.g., health fairs, community events).
- Demonstrating mastery of patient care, including assessment, treatment, care planning, patient education and evidence-based practice.
- Leading by example of good work habits and effective professional relationships.
- Actively embracing change emphasizing positive interactions.
Education
- Required: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
- Preferred: Bachelor's of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN).
Experience
- Required: Minimum of 2 years' clinical experience.
- Evidence of leadership abilities required.
- Knowledge of general nursing principles and practice skills.
- Knowledge of organizational functions, policies and regulations.
- Knowledge of current trends and new developments in area of specialty.
- Applicable knowledge of those areas requiring special education.
Position Requirements
- Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Tennessee.
- BLS completed prior to going to the unit/department and maintained thereafter.
- De-escalation training.
- NRP and Stable certification within 6 months of hire and maintained ongoing thereafter.
- Tennessee licensure or multistate licensure from a compact state must be obtained within three months of hire for non-Tennessee residents.
- Preferred: Certification in maternal newborn nursing or Women's health field, to be obtained within 1 year of eligibility.
