RN Clinical Nurse II - UNC Health Youth Behavioral Health Hospital

About the Role

We are seeking a Clinical Nurse II, preferably with strong clinical experience in developmental disabilities and adolescent mental health, to work with a multidisciplinary team at UNC Health Youth Behavioral Health (YBH) in Butner, North Carolina. The Clinical Nurse II will primarily work on 4YBH, a 10-bed unit serving pediatric patients with developmental disabilities in need of crisis stabilization, providing multidisciplinary treatment focused on addressing psychiatric, behavioral, medical, and psychosocial needs.

Youth Behavioral Health Hospital (YBH) is a 54-bed, 24-hour, locked psychiatric facility. The YBH philosophy is grounded in a milieu-based, trauma-informed, and therapeutic setting, serving patients with complex histories, including aggression and psychosis. Safety, positive coping skills, healthy living, and leisure activities are key components of care. The interdisciplinary team includes Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, and Nursing Services.

Staff are cross-trained to work across four units dedicated to children and adolescents with mental health diagnoses, dual diagnoses, substance misuse, and complex behaviors, including those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Responsibilities

• Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards, coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.
• Education: Identifies and meets learning needs of self; attends relevant education programs; uses patient education materials; assesses readiness to learn and developmental level of patients/families/caregivers.
• Evaluation of Care: Identifies expected patient outcomes; participates in interdisciplinary team discussions; communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care.
• Implementation: Demonstrates competence in care for patients with complex needs; performs bedside point-of-care testing; utilizes healthcare organization and nursing standards; organizes and prioritizes care; consults appropriate resources for complex care issues.
• Leadership: Develops professional goals; participates in unit goal-setting and performance improvement; promotes cost-effective care; provides feedback to co-workers; promotes a safe and secure environment.
• Patient Assessment: Recognizes data from complex situations to determine care priorities; synthesizes assessment data; anticipates discharge needs; develops relationships with families to promote advocacy.
• Planning: Collaborates with patient/family to prepare or update the plan of care; uses multidisciplinary resources; addresses cultural and ethnic issues; prioritizes tasks for complex patient needs.
• Research: Reads relevant journals and brings ideas/questions to staff for applicability.

Requirements

• Graduation from a school of professional nursing.
• If hired after January 6, 2014, must enroll within four years of employment and obtain a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing within seven years of employment.
• Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
• One year of nursing experience.
• Experience in behavioral health nursing (pediatric or adult) strongly preferred.
• Strong understanding of pediatric patients with developmental disabilities in need of crisis stabilization and behavioral/psychosocial needs.
• Excellent communication and team skills.

Schedule

• 36 hours per week (full-time).
• 12-hour shifts, currently night shift only.
• No rotating shifts; includes weekdays and weekends (preferred scheduling).
• No on-call requirement.
• Requires attendance at a weeklong hospital orientation in Chapel Hill, offered every two weeks:
  • Monday and Tuesday: In-person from 8 AM to 5 PM in Chapel Hill.
  • Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday: Virtual.

Pay

Salary range: $34.22 - $48.38 per hour (hiring range determined by experience and internal equity).
