About the role

Functions in a first-line management and clinical leadership role coordinating patient care activities on the nursing unit. Serves as a coordinator of the multi-disciplinary approach to patient care, including care planning, patient teaching, and discharge planning. Ensures appropriate staffing and coverage for unanticipated needs within departmental guidelines, assists in long- and short-term staff scheduling, and participates in interviewing prospective staff.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures staff utilize the nursing process in meeting patient care standards and effective delegation skills in assigning duties.
  • Works with unit staff to ensure Carelogistic/EPIC software accurately reflects unit and patient status (anticipated treatment, discharge, patient location, PPRs, and patient alerts).
  • May take assignments as necessary and performs other job-related duties within job scope as requested by Nurse Manager.
  • Assists fellow staff members in completing assignments during times of crisis and assumes primary nurse, team leader, or patient care responsibilities as needed.
  • Facilitates daily huddles and discussions around huddle boards, and debriefs after critical events (e.g., patient falls) to improve learning.
  • Receives pertinent information from acute care management and follows up on any needs during off hours; intervenes appropriately and keeps Nurse Manager informed of departmental issues.
  • Provides input to associate evaluations as requested by the Nurse Manager and acts continuously to improve processes and services.
  • Participates in data collection related to unit-specific or hospital performance improvement (PI) indicators (e.g., chart reviews for TJC, tracer activities, hand-hygiene, VTE data) and submits PI data monthly (minimum 75% compliance).
  • Demonstrates accountability for reviewing emails and communications regarding practice, policy, and organizational changes.
  • Performs equipment safety checks (e.g., defibrillators, blood glucose monitors, medication rooms).
  • Oversees appropriate bedside shift report/hand-off, including patient and family in the process, and coaches staff accordingly.
  • Ensures staff engage in purposeful hourly rounding to anticipate patient needs related to the 5 Ps.
  • Assists staff in providing evidence-based practice in patient care and following policies and procedures.
  • Holds staff accountable for patient safety activities (e.g., using two identifiers, bar code technology, labeling specimens at bedside, fall prevention).
  • Monitors and ensures staff compliance with safe infection prevention practices (e.g., hand-hygiene, isolation precautions, maintenance bundles for CAUTI/CLABSI).
  • Participates in and/or leads Performance Projects (A3) as determined by Manager/Director.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited (ACEN/CCNE) school of nursing; BSN preferred. If no Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, agreement to start a Bachelor’s Program within 12 months and complete within 5 years is required.
  • Specialty certification desirable.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in Critical Care, Radiology, Emergency Department, or Operating Room required.
  • Previous experience as a regular Charge Nurse or Assistant Nurse Manager preferred.
  • Strong leadership traits, staffing, scheduling, and communication skills preferred.

Qualifications

  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Florida.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required.

Schedule

This is a Modified Full-Time position on day shift.
