RN Clinical Coordinator - ICU (NIGHTS)

About the Role

The RN, Clinical Coordinator is responsible for maintaining and coordinating quality patient care on a continuing basis under the guidance of the Nurse Manager. This role functions as the Charge Nurse for the designated unit, manages staff training in conjunction with the assigned Nurse Educator, and provides administrative coverage for the Nurse Manager in their absence.

Responsibilities

• Direct and supervise patient care during assigned shifts.
• Make rounds on all patients to ensure current clinical patient care standards are met.
• Analyze shift workload to determine staffing needs and proactively pursue coverage for call-ins or unexpected staffing shortages.
• Coordinate patient transfers, admissions, and discharges to ensure effective patient throughput.
• Make bed allocations and patient assignments based on staff competence.
• Adjust workload to meet patient and unit needs.
• Consult with and keep the Nurse Manager informed of unit activities, needs, and problems.
• Facilitate daily operations and workflow, reprioritizing work as needed.
• Verify orders efficiently and demonstrate competence in patient care areas.
• Actively solicit feedback from patients and visitors.
• Function independently with most procedures/protocols, seeking physician assistance when required.
• Respond to emergency situations in a timely and effective manner.
• Collaborate with the Nurse Manager on staffing recommendations, including transfers, promotions, and staff development needs.
• Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with off-tour supervisors to foster problem-solving.
• Foster teamwork within assigned areas and make administrative decisions in the Nurse Manager’s absence.
• Assign preceptors for new hires and monitor their progress.
• Assess team members' clinical competency through observation, testing, and evaluation.
• Serve as a mentor and resource to students, new hires, LPNs, floating/flexi nurses, and unlicensed personnel.
• Provide feedback on employee performance to the Nurse Manager and employees.
• Coordinate staff development and unit-based educational needs with the Clinical Nurse Educator.
• Assist the Nurse Manager in retention efforts and monitor staff performance for compliance with established standards.
• Ensure compliance with policies and procedures and implement unit structures that encourage teamwork and communication.
• Proactively address conflicts in a timely manner.
• Attend hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services, and facilitate staff meetings as needed.
• Demonstrate commitment to flexible work scheduling to ensure patient care.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Reports to: Nurse Manager
Supervises: Nursing staff

Qualifications

• Must be a Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Virginia or a compact state. Specialty areas may require further education.
• Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
• 2+ years' experience in a specialized area with Charge Nurse or equivalent supervisory experience.
• Certified in BLS, ACLS, PALS, or equivalent; CPAN preferred.
