Job Summary
RN Lactation Consultant effectively demonstrates the ability to guide, counsel, and assist patients with questions related to breastfeeding. This includes performing initial and annual competencies, making daily rounds, attending in-services, and coordinating follow-up calls.
Responsibilities
- Performs initial and annual competencies per job class.
- Makes daily rounds on all breast feeding parents, assisting as needed.
- Attends in-services, all required training/education, and unit/departmental meetings.
- Instructs patients and staff in the operation of breast pumps and other breast-feeding aides.
- Affords assistance to premature infants with their breast-feeding needs.
- Coordinates follow-up phone calls to discharged patients to address any issues or concerns.
- Taught monthly pre-natal breast feeding classes.
- Conducted consultations as requested.
- Completes monthly OPS reports and submits them to administration.
- Maintains performance, patient, and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
- Adheres to DCH Behavioral Standards, including creating positive relationships with patients, families, coworkers, and employees.
- Ensures the safety of patients, visitors, and employees by identifying and reducing unsafe practices.
- Recognizes and takes appropriate action to reduce risks and hazards to promote safety for patients, visitors, and employees.
- Performs essential job functions in a manner that ensures the safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
- Requires use of electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, and intranet.
- Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Current Alabama RN licensure.
- Current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant required.
- Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
Physical Factors
- Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Standing and walking for prolonged periods.
- Reaching reasonable distances in any direction.

- Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range.
- Physical presence onsite is essential.
