About the role
5 South is a 40-bed, fast-paced, team-oriented, medical-surgical unit caring for acutely ill adults specializing in urology, nephrology, trauma, and colorectal surgery and general body systems. Our many specialties and diverse patient population will provide daily challenges and vast opportunities to develop a wide breadth of nursing knowledge and hone the valuable nursing skills so important in nursing development in future applications across all specialties. We partner with our Virtual Nurse partners to provide collaborative patient care utilizing virtual and bedside nursing.
Responsibilities
- Provide individualized, high-quality nursing care to patients of all ages
- Use a team approach to delegate and coordinate patient care at admission, transfer, and discharge
- Independently deliver nursing care using the Nurse Practice Act, Mercy Medical Center policies, nursing standards, ethical principles, and professional judgment
- Work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as scheduled
- Assess, plan, and implement nursing care while ensuring patient comfort
- Practice safe patient handling techniques
- Continue to evaluate assigned patients and provide ongoing treatment
- Anticipate, identify, and respond to educational and emotional needs of patients and families
- Guide and direct healthcare personnel (i.e. Patient Care Technicians) in caring for patients
- Maintain knowledge of equipment set-up, maintenance, and use (i.e., IV pumps, monitoring equipment, and drainage devices)
- Utilize safeguards such as IV pump drug library and monitor alarms whenever available to maximize patient safety
- Initiates emergency support measures (i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation, protecting patient from injury)
Requirements
- Possession of a current or compact state licensure as a registered nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa
- Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certified within six (6) weeks of hire
Schedule
- 36 hours/week
- 3, 12-hour shifts (7a-7p or 7p-7a)
- Day and Night Shift Available
Pay & Benefits
- Relocation and Sign On Bonus of up to $20,000:
- 0-1 years of experience: $10,000
- 1-3 years of experience: $15,000
- 3+ years of experience: $20,000
