Hourly Pay Range: $61.740 – $90.160 (placement within the range based on years of RN experience, as defined by the collective bargaining agreement between Sharp HealthCare and Sharp Professional Nurses Network, United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals, NUHHCE, AFSME, AFL-CIO).
Schedule
- 12-hour shifts (12/36 schedule)
- Shift times: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- On-call: not required
Responsibilities
- Provide direct and indirect nursing services to patients and families.
- Use systematic planning, appropriate methods, and timely exchange of information with the multidisciplinary team and patient/family to coordinate care.
- Demonstrate ability to focus on and manage multiple patient needs and aspects of care; actively communicate with the care team to plan patient care.
- Utilize available resources to problem-solve and determine the most effective approach to action.
- Apply the nursing process and a critical thinking approach to provide patient care that incorporates mind, body, and spirit; individualized, goal-directed, and consistent with current standards of safety.
- Identify actual or potential problems for which the patient is at risk; continuously evaluate interventions and care, adjusting the plan as patient and family needs change.
- Identify the need for referrals based on initial and ongoing assessments and collaborate with patient, family, and other team members to develop a comprehensive plan of care.
- Prioritize demand for resources and collaborate with others to meet individualized patient needs.
- Act as a preceptor/teacher for other nurses on applying the nursing process with a particular unit population.
- Make appropriate referrals based on information obtained in assessments and evaluations.
- Implement safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients with complex needs due to multi-system disease and/or complications of treatment.
- Demonstrate accountability for achieving patient outcomes and an ability to quickly recognize patient diagnoses even when presenting symptoms or situations differ.
- Document care per department/entity guidelines, ensuring a comprehensive, detailed, and concise picture of patient care that reflects a critical thinking and problem-oriented approach.
- Serve as a resource for other staff in managing unit-specific documentation issues.
- Delegate, assign, and communicate expectations for care delivery processes to each team member; ensure follow-through on delegated tasks.
- Analyze situations to determine appropriate levels of supervision needed before delegating tasks.
- Assess the appropriateness of physician orders and question them when necessary.
- Provide support, assistance, and positive feedback to coworkers; help improve performance and offer constructive feedback.
- Provide unit-specific information to students, floats, travelers, and registry personnel, documenting appropriately.
- Offer incidental teaching to team members and seek ways to improve work processes and systems.
- Establish and maintain a therapeutic relationship with patients and families, anticipating and addressing barriers (e.g., spiritual, cultural, language, or communication challenges).
- Analyze social/cultural variables and adapt nursing interventions to meet diverse needs.
- Serve as a patient advocate by removing obstacles, identifying and supporting needs, and interpreting for patients and physicians.
- Provide age-appropriate patient education to facilitate recovery, self-care, end-of-life care, health maintenance, health promotion, and wellness.
- Coordinate transfer and discharge planning and teaching in collaboration with the healthcare team.
- Collaborate with team members to identify, develop, and/or revise patient education materials.
- Demonstrate flexibility in teaching based on learner needs and integrate adult learning principles.
Requirements
- Graduate of a nursing school.
- 1 year of clinical experience (RNs with less than 12 months of experience will complete new graduate requirements).
- Current California Registered Nurse (RN) license – CA Board of Registered Nursing.
- AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) certification – American Heart Association.
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification – employee provides certificate.
Skills
- Independently perform the nursing process through individualized assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients with overt and subtle needs.
- Provide safe nursing care for patients in complex situations with some assistance and supervision.
- Demonstrate competency in all unit skills and some advanced skills; may teach skills competencies.
- Coordinate patient care administered by other members of the care team.
- Assume responsibility as a relief charge nurse and assist with preceptorship/professional development of new nurses and students.
- Use common equipment and medications safely in the practice setting; consult others when unfamiliar.
- Recognize inconsistencies in patient care and manage potential complications.
- Demonstrate consistent organization and prioritization of workload; confidently manage emergency situations.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and comply with all regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Demonstrate professional behavior through participation in unit activities and committees as appropriate.
- Utilize a variety of teaching/coaching strategies to assist families through the disease process/experience.
- Promote clinical effectiveness, efficient use of resources, and quality care in the practice setting.
- Transfer knowledge and mentor others to improve clinical practice.
- Demonstrate complex problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
Benefits
- $5,000 relocation bonus for new hires moving to San Diego (full-time positions only).
- $2,500 referral bonus for internal Sharp employees who refer a qualified external new hire (referring employee’s name must be listed on the application).
Eligibility Requirements for Bonuses:
- Minimum 1 year of related experience.
- Not eligible: current Sharp employees, rehires/reinstates rejoining less than 12 months from last date of employment, or transfers to a non-bonus eligible department/position.
- Referral incentive eligibility: referral must list the Sharp employee’s name on the application; external referrals only; former Sharp employees must be more than 12 months from their last date of employment at the time of referral.
