Responsibilities

• Performs rigging in the installation, maintenance, and overhaul of components of hydroelectric dam structures.
• Operates diesel and gasoline-driven motor trucks and cranes with capacities ranging from 2 to 30 tons for general maintenance around the project.
• Determines proper methods for fastening slings, hitching loads, clamping cables, and tying ropes to objects.
• Fabricates and constructs crane booms, steel platforms, fish traps, and movable steel trucks for moving bulky and heavy items.
• Operates electrically-powered cranes with capacities ranging from 7.5 to 350 tons.
• Uses standard hand signals to direct the movement of cranes and loads.
• Plans, lays out, assembles, and installs rigging to move heavy loads.
• Splices and fits all types of rigging equipment to ensure safety and timeliness of movement.
• Plans, lays out, fabricates, constructs, and installs steel and sheet metal structural members and equipment accessories.
• Uses welding equipment to fabricate and install items.
• Operates electrically-powered drills, saws, and pneumatic tools.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Must possess a valid State driver’s license.
• Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain NWD Crane Operator Class II Certification.
• A pre-employment physical is required.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Rigger without more than normal supervision. This includes:

• Planning, laying out, assembling, and installing rigging to move heavy loads.
• Using and understanding standard hand signals to direct the movement of loads both manually and with a crane.
• Splicing and fitting all types of rigging equipment to ensure safety and timeliness.
• Planning, laying out, fabricating, constructing, and installing steel and sheet metal structural members and equipment accessories.
• Using welding equipment to fabricate and install items.
• Operating electrically-powered drills, saws, and pneumatic tools.

Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort & Working Conditions

Physical Effort: Work requires heavy physical effort, including prolonged periods of standing, climbing ladders, and working in cramped spaces. Must be able to lift and carry equipment and materials weighing frequently up to, and occasionally over, 45 pounds. Must be able to see with limited visibility (e.g., when using welding masks) and have normal depth perception.

Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside the powerhouse. Indoor work subjects the employee to high noise levels, and outdoor work is subject to usual climate extremes. There is danger of cuts, bruises, and burns from equipment operated and falling from ladders and scaffolds. The employee is subject to the discomfort of wearing required safety equipment such as hard hats, welding masks or shields, gloves, safety glasses and goggles, safety shoes, respirators, and earplugs as required. The employee is exposed to welding fumes, acids, and solvents normal to the trade. There is an added danger of drowning when working around swift-moving water. Must wear appropriate safety equipment and protective clothing and successfully complete and maintain all occupational health requirements.
