RF Group Leader
What Your Job Will Be Like
The Radio Frequency (RF) group leader provides management, supervision, and technical oversight for a team of engineers and technicians supporting CEBAF accelerator operations, and other lab initiatives. Responsible for the supervision and the safety of the RF group personnel. Work with customers to develop planning, cost, and schedules to maintain reliable RF systems to support accelerator operations, address obsolescence issues, and lead state-of-the-art High Power RF (HPRF) and Low Level RF (LLRF) controls development. Ensure that the RF staff is up to date in safety training and following EHS policy, especially as it applies to hazardous energy control. Ensures the RF group follows and uses work planning tools (ePAS, ATlist and MSD) for all relevant tasks.
Works with Accelerator Operations and Accelerator Engineering Systems management
Works with Accelerator Operations and Accelerator Engineering Systems management to develop strategies that address RF performance improvement and obsolescence needs for the CEBAF accelerator, experimental halls, and other lab initiatives. Leads the development of new RF equipment/systems that: resolves obsolescence issues, and provides new or enhanced RF capabilities to accelerator physicists.
Maintain an Understanding of the RF System Operation Requirements
Maintain an understanding of the RF system operation requirements for CEBAF operations. Analyze accelerator downtime weekly and work with accelerator operability to increase machine availability/reliability.
Ensure Projects are Developed with Relevant Stakeholder Involvement
Ensures projects are developed with relevant stakeholder involvement, reviewed at appropriate stages, and documented upon completion.
Maintain RF Equipment Over Its Life Cycle
Maintains RF equipment over its life cycle.
Supports R&D Initiatives
Maintains an understanding of RF and accelerator technological advancements and supports R&D initiatives of Jefferson Lab.
Develop Strategies to Address RF System Problems
Develop strategies to address yearly RF system problems, repairs, maintenance, and other issues related to system performance. Ensures RF system spares are on hand in a timely manner.
Directs the RF Group
Directs the RF group to use the accepted work planning tools for all relevant tasks and jobs.
Affords Accelerator Emergency Repairs
Affords assistance in the coordination off-hour accelerator emergency repairs to support 24-hour a day operation of the accelerator.
Stays Abreast of RF and Accelerator Technological Advancements
Stays abreast of RF and accelerator technological advancements and supports R&D initiatives of Jefferson Lab.
Education and Experience
- Required: 15 or more years relevant experience with electrical engineering systems.
- Required: 5 or more years Experience with projects exceeding $500k required.
- Required: 5 or more years Experience supervising technical (engineering and technician) staff.
- Preferred: Experience with project management tools.
- Education Required: Bachelor's Degree electrical engineering.
- Preferred: Master's Degree electrical engineering.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Background in electrical engineering, especially in a scientific or technical environment.
- Expert in accelerator RF applications (RF power and/or Low Level RF controls) and/or HV Power supplies/power conversion.
- Knowledge of electrical circuits and systems.
- System expert in one of the following areas, RF/Microwave electronics, RF Power systems, Low Level RF (control theory, Digital design) or Analog/power electronics.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical engineering groups and projects.
- Understanding of electrical safety and Lock out Tag out procedures and protocols.
