Key Responsibilities
- Revenue Recognition (ASC 606)
- Own end-to-end revenue recognition under ASC 606 for all customer contracts, including SaaS subscriptions, implementation fees, professional services, and funded development arrangements.
- Analyze multi-element arrangements and determine stand-alone selling prices, performance obligations, and transaction price allocation across contract types.
- Review contract modifications, variable consideration, and non-standard deal terms for revenue accounting implications prior to execution.
- Maintain and update HCHB’s revenue recognition policy documentation and accounting position memos.
- Partner with Legal and Sales on new contract structures and customer-specific arrangements, providing proactive guidance on revenue impact
- Technical Accounting & Research
- Serve as the primary technical accounting resource for the organization, researching and documenting positions on complex or emerging issues under US GAAP.
- Assess applicability of ASC 350-40 (internal-use software) and related guidance for software development costs, including co-development and funded development arrangements.
- Prepare and maintain accounting position memos on significant transactions, estimates, and non-routine items.
- Support external audit on revenue, capitalized software, and other technical accounting areas, ensuring workpapers are audit-ready
- Billing & Systems Alignment (Zuora / Oracle)
- Own the alignment between Zuora billing, Zuora revenue, and the Oracle Fusion GL ensuring accuracy and completeness through the monthly close.
- Partner with O2C Operations on billing accuracy, contract-to-invoice matching, and deferred revenue tracking.
- Identify and resolve discrepancies between executed contracts, Zuora billing configurations, and revenue schedules.
- Drive improvements to Zuora revenue module configuration and billing process controls in coordination with systems and operations teams.
- Month-End Close & Reporting
- Lead all revenue-related month-end close activities, including deferred revenue, unbilled AR, contract asset/liability reconciliations, and contra-revenue entries.
- Prepare revenue flux analysis and variance commentary for internal management reporting and Hearst reporting packages.
- Maintain supporting schedules and workpapers at audit-ready quality on a monthly basis
- Cross-Functional Partnership
- Serve as a trusted advisor to Legal, Sales, FP&A, and Operations on deal structure, contract terms, and their accounting implications.
- Collaborate with the Controller on development of accounting policies, internal controls, and close process improvements.
- Support due diligence, integration, or special projects as needed in connection with Hearst corporate initiatives.
- Continuous Improvement & Leadership
- Lead initiatives to automate and modernize revenue and order to cash processes across the organization.
- Build and mentor a high-performing OTC team focused on accuracy, customer service, and continuous improvement.
- Foster strong relationships across Accounting, Procurement, FP&A, and Hearst Shared Services teams.
- Champion a culture of accountability, operational excellence, and service delivery.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA required.
- 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years focused on revenue recognition or technical accounting under US GAAP
- Deep, hands-on knowledge of ASC 606, including multi-element arrangements, contract modifications, variable consideration, and principal vs. agent analysis.
- Experience in a SaaS or software company (public, private, or PE-backed).
- Strong ability to independently research, document, and communicate technical accounting positions to both accounting and non-accounting audiences.
- Proficiency with Zuora Billing and Revenue or comparable revenue management platforms strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with Oracle Fusion Cloud preferred.
- Prior experience with ASC 350-40 (internal-use software capitalization) analysis, including funded or co-development arrangements, preferred.
- Public accounting background (Big 4 or national firm) with software/technology industry focus preferred.
- Experience working within a Hearst, PE-backed, or public company reporting environment a plus.
- Strong understanding of internal controls, SOX compliance, and audit support requirements.
