The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) team consists of over 700 staff across 13 locations in Indiana. We collaborate with the Governor's office, General Assembly, state agencies, individuals, businesses, and tax practitioners to administer Indiana's tax laws. DOR manages over 65 tax types and processes nearly $21 billion in tax revenue annually, with a mission to serve Indiana by administering tax laws fairly, securely, and efficiently.

About the role

The Revenue Tax Auditor conducts field audits for the State of Indiana, analyzing business records to ensure compliance with Indiana tax laws. This role emphasizes customer focus and innovation to improve accuracy, efficiency, and productivity in tax administration.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze books and records of businesses to ensure compliance with Indiana tax laws.
  • Generate data requests and extract, evaluate, and use information from business records.
  • Interview taxpayers and their representatives, including those who may be uncooperative or hostile.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, taxpayers, and others involved in the audit process.
  • Travel overnight as required for assigned audits.
  • Perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • May supervise others based on agency needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 15 hours of accounting coursework.
  • At least 7 years of tax auditing experience.
  • Working knowledge of accounting principles and auditing standards.
  • General knowledge of statutes, regulations, and case law related to tax compliance.

Pay

Salary starts at $53,222.00 and may vary based on education and work experience.
