Rethinking the Practice Model for a New Generation of Accountants
About the role
Hardy Accounting is a modern practice built on principles that attract and retain Gen Z talent. The firm was founded by Grace Hardy, who bypassed the university track to launch her practice at age 21. Hardy Accounting represents a direct roadmap for shifting away from rigid corporate traditions and closing the Gen Z talent gap.
What We're Building
The UK accountancy sector faces an unprecedented talent crisis—73% of firms are actively turning away potential clients due to lack of staff capacity. We're building a practice that bridges this widening gap by prioritizing apprenticeship routes, output-based performance, and giving junior staff a genuine operational voice.
Our Approach to Training
- Apprentices are thrown in at the deep end—during the first fortnight, apprentices have one-to-one client interactions
- Learning happens through direct experience: asking questions and adapting in real-world situations
- Apprenticeships now extend up to Master's level, allowing junior talent to build practical skills while earning a full salary
- No university degree required—we believe in the power of the AAT apprenticeship at 18
Our Operational Philosophy
- Focus on output, not presenteeism: Performance indicators shift away from hours punched into a spreadsheet toward clear, output-based delivery goals
- Physical community cultivation: Because Gen Z lives are fundamentally digital, we highly value a physical sense of office community and collaborative team environments to counteract pandemic-era educational disruption
- Reverse mentoring: Quarterly check-ins where junior employees safely critique firm systems and management styles, with wider team meetings to critique firm systems and processes
- Democratic software selection: When preparing for regulatory shifts like Making Tax Digital (MTD), the entire team is involved in vetting vendors—ensuring those using the software day-to-day have a hand in choosing it
What We Avoid
We do not rely on rigid billable-hour targets and timesheets, which drive young talent to more progressive sectors. We do not eliminate entry-level tasks outright—research shows over-reliance on automating foundational tasks runs the risk of "deskilling" junior staff, preventing them from developing critical professional judgment needed to spot anomalies in AI outputs later in their careers.
Our Commitment to Staff Development
We give junior staff a platform to flag broken workflows, preventing small internal frustrations from building up to the point where talent leaves the firm. Staff have an operational voice to spot friction points and technical bugs early, before they trigger employee departures.
Career Trajectory
Unlike traditional graduate tracks that involve 3 years at university followed by a 3+ year graduate scheme, our modern apprentice track offers 3 to 4 years of professional apprenticeship with continuous hands-on practice. You enter the job market as a fully qualified expert with direct client experience rather than competing for entry-level roles.
