RETAIL STOREKEEPER 2 - ELY

This position oversees the Access Secure Package Program and the SOCRE 5 Program at Ely State Prison. The Retail Storekeeper 2 is responsible for ordering inventory, stock control, and merchandising in a high-volume retail operation involving items such as food, soft drinks, personal hygiene products, and small electrical appliances.

Responsibilities

  • Order, receive, and inspect merchandise to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance with specifications.
  • Perform physical inventory counts and maintain stock control records.
  • Input inmate orders, print receipts, package items, and distribute orders through secure windows or to lockdown units.
  • Verify inmate identity, check items against receipt quantities, and obtain signatures for delivered merchandise.
  • Enforce storeroom and computer security policies, ensuring items comply with security level restrictions.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of the stockroom and equipment per established health and safety standards.
  • Supervise inmate workers and Retail Storekeeper 1’s during the absence of the Retail Storekeeper 3.
  • Procure merchandise through direct purchase procedures and enter data into a point-of-sale (POS) or computer-based system.
  • Develop and implement store layout plans to maximize visual appeal and increase per capita sales.
  • Shelve merchandise, rotate stock, and recommend mark-downs for slow-moving items.
  • Revise, add, or delete catalog entries to maintain up-to-date merchandise information for inmates.
  • Poll inmate population and distribute merchandise catalogs to appropriate security levels.
  • Check inmate accounts and print reports upon request from authorized facility personnel.
  • In NSHE retail environments, assist in budget development, revenue projection, expense monitoring, and profit goal attainment.
  • Liaise with vendors on returns, pricing, and payment terms, and monitor industry trends.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school.
  • Two years of storekeeping or retail experience, including one year of performing physical inventories, maintaining records, and ordering merchandise; OR
  • One year of experience as a Retail Storekeeper 1 in Nevada State service; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting (applicant is required to pay for these items).

Skills

  • Working knowledge of physical inventory procedures, records, and controls.
  • Familiarity with vendors and product lines such as tobacco, souvenirs, and general goods.
  • Understanding of profit-producing methods and procedures in a retail environment.
  • Proficiency in recordkeeping, including hard copy and electronic files.
  • Basic computer skills, including keyboarding and POS systems.
  • Knowledge of perpetual inventory methods.
  • General knowledge of market survey techniques, basic calculator functions, and storekeeping equipment (e.g., forklift, pallet jack, dolly).
  • Ability to provide high-quality customer service and resolve complaints.
  • Skill in using reference manuals and informational resources for procurement.
  • Ability to maintain procurement records and coordinate the work of others.
  • Competence in reviewing inventories, identifying discrepancies, and establishing stocking levels.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and ensure timely delivery of orders.
  • Negotiation skills for vendor interactions regarding quantity, quality, price, and delivery.
  • Ability to train coworkers and apply State and agency policies related to ordering merchandise.
  • Proficiency in operating a forklift, pallet jack, and dolly.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs to furniture and equipment.
  • Skill in locating, interpreting, and explaining computer data related to inmate accounts.

Schedule

Hours of operation are 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Hours are subject to change based on agency needs.
