About the Role
At Office Depot and OfficeMax, the General Manager is responsible for growing total sales and services within the location, driving the overall customer experience, and fostering a sales service culture. This role owns associate training, talent development, and succession planning while ensuring maximum sales, profitability, and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Achieve sales, services, operations profit, and customer/community relationship goals.
- Develop and execute store strategies and tactics to increase conversion rates and customer traffic.
- Lead, motivate, and inspire associates to create a customer-first environment with a positive experience.
- Engage with the local community and host in-store events with small and medium businesses (SMB) to build client relationships and brand loyalty.
- Oversee hiring, merchandising, operations, and execution of store and company standards.
- Resolve associate and customer relations concerns in partnership with business stakeholders.
- Manage performance of all associates and foster a positive, inclusive workplace environment.
- Act as a Change Champion by initiating and supporting company changes.
- Train and develop associates at all levels to create a sales-focused environment and talent bench strength.
- Deliver an exceptional customer experience through observation, interaction, and issue resolution.
- Implement training, tools, and systems to meet customer needs.
- Manage performance appraisals, providing timely developmental feedback to associates.
- Support diversity, innovation, and risk-taking in the workplace.
- Address associate conflicts effectively and provide real-time counsel on performance issues.
- Increase sales and profitability while managing staffing needs using labor models and workforce management systems.
- Oversee inventory levels, assets, expenses, and merchandise flow-through processes.
- Maintain store appearance according to company guidelines, including signage, labeling, and visual merchandising.
- Lead daily, weekly, and monthly store meetings to communicate company initiatives, policies, and operational updates.
- Ensure associate understanding of company benefits, directives, and programs.
- Obtain and maintain Sales Leader certification and other required training (e.g., Anti-Harassment, Code of Ethics).
- Adhere to OSHA, Workers’ Compensation, wage and hour, I9 compliance, and other legal requirements.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Retail Management, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum two to four years of management experience or demonstrated skills through an internal development program.
- Strong business acumen and ability to lead, coach, and manage others professionally.
- Executive presence with the ability to positively influence at all levels.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to plan, prioritize, and execute detailed instructions efficiently.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including independent and collaborative work.
- Sound judgment and people management abilities.
- Adaptability to changing environments and ability to achieve goals under stress and ambiguity.
- Proficiency in using computers and technology for information access and POS systems.
