About the role
The Retail Sales Associate assists customers in making purchases, merchandises and displays products, processes payments, and maintains a high level of customer service.
Responsibilities
- Greet customers, answer questions, and provide information on products, promotions, and policies.
- Describe merchandise and explain its use, operation, and care to customers.
- Recommend, select, and help locate merchandise based on customer needs and desires.
- Compute sales prices, total purchases, and process cash or credit payments.
- Issue receipts, refunds, credit, or change accurately.
- Maintain cash register and ensure contents are secure.
- Keep the cash station area clean, orderly, and well-stocked with supplies and products.
- Maintain overall neatness and cleanliness of the retail operation.
- Turn in cash drawer and complete sales reconciliation at the end of shifts.
- Assist with special events.
- Maintain awareness of safety issues and report them immediately to management.
Requirements
- Partial High School education; High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred.
- Basic math skills.
- Interest and knowledge in Washington, DC's landmarks, monuments, and memorials preferred.
- Excellent sanitation habits and professional appearance.
- Ability to communicate and attend to guests with the highest standard of service.
- Ability to pass cash handling training.
- Problem sensitivity and the ability to recognize and communicate issues to management.
Physical and mental demands
- Moving about on foot frequently to accomplish tasks, including movements within the unit.
- Bending, lifting, carrying, reaching, or extending arms and hands above shoulder height frequently in a constantly changing environment.
- Lifting, carrying, and pushing up to 10 lbs. regularly, 10-15 lbs. frequently, and up to 25 lbs. occasionally.
- Withstanding temperature extremes in indoor and outdoor environments.
- Reading and writing work-related documents in English.
- Clear speech recognition and clarity to understand and communicate with customers and coworkers in English.
- Constant verbal communication in a sometimes fast-paced environment.
- Physical attendance in the unit to perform duties.
- Ability to stand for the entire workday.
