Responder / Environmental Scientist, Engineer

Tetra Tech is seeking a full-time, mid-level Responder / Environmental Scientist or Engineer for our Denver, CO office. This is an on-site position.

About the role

The selected candidate will join a growing and energetic team supporting environmental projects in the Rocky Mountain region of the U.S. This role involves all facets of environmental management, including site investigation, Brownfields redevelopment, removal assessment, data management, and emergency response for Federal and Private clients.

Responsibilities

• Support and lead field work, including project management, budgeting, and scheduling.
• Provide technical support for a long-term U.S. Environmental Protection Agency contract, covering site investigation, Brownfields redevelopment, removal assessment, data management, and emergency response.
• Work across diverse site types, including abandoned properties, mine sites, industrial/commercial facilities, orphaned wells, and spills in Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.
• Oversee and conduct multi-media sampling, field audits, inspections, and use of field monitoring equipment.
• Organize and review data, prepare reports and maps, conduct file reviews, collect air monitoring data, and support training and exercises.
• Lead a field team, including health and safety activities, sampling, data collection, and reporting.
• Perform tasks across multiple disciplines to ensure successful project completion.
• Demonstrate full knowledge of each project’s status and goals.
• Mobilize to spill or response sites and work with EPA and other parties to support air monitoring, sampling, communications, and data management.
• Operate environmental monitoring equipment and work in Levels A, B, C, and D PPE.

Requirements

• B.S./B.A. in Geology, Chemistry, Engineering, Biology, Geography, or a related environmental science field.
• 7+ years of relevant experience.
• Periodic on-call support (up to two weeks per month) with the ability to respond quickly within a mandatory response time.
• Ability to travel up to 70%, including overnight and weekend stays.
• Demonstrated ability to organize, coordinate, analyze, and present technical material.
• Excellent writing skills, including the ability to read and assimilate technical and scientific information.
• Highly motivated, customer-focused, and able to work well in a team or independently.
• Strong communication, client interaction, and organizational skills.
• Ability to manage a heavy workload and work under direct on-site supervision.
• Ability to wear Level D-B PPE.
• Pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications

• 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER training.
• Completion of ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 training.
• Asbestos and lead certification.
• Experience with hydrogeological investigations, hazardous materials surveys (including asbestos and lead-based paint), and analytical data using spreadsheets and databases.
• Experience with conceptual remedial action plans, remedial cost estimates, Phase I and II ESAs (to ASTM or higher standards).
• Mastery of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access).
• Fluency in Spanish (spoken and written) is a plus.

Work Environment

• Up to 70% travel to support environmental emergency response situations throughout the Mountain Region, often on short notice.
• Must be able to mobilize for emergency response efforts from our warehouse in Arvada, CO within 2 hours when on-call.
• Periodic on-call support (up to two weeks per month) with mandatory response times.
• Work in Levels A, B, C, and D PPE.
• Work outside in all weather conditions, including hot, cold, and inclement weather.
• Work around or with chemical and biological hazards.
• Work periodic long days (12+ hours), including evenings and weekends, especially when in the field.

Physical Requirements

• Walk on uneven terrain.
• Lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
• Wear and work in an air-purifying respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
• Drive on a regular basis; must pass a motor vehicle record background check and maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.

Schedule

• Primarily Monday–Friday, but includes evenings and weekends as necessary.
• 40+ hours per week with overtime requirements, including 12+ hour days when in the field.
• Work locations include the Denver, CO office, field sites (up to 70% travel), and the Arvada, CO warehouse as needed.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $71,000 – $84,000, depending on education, experience, skills, and location.
