Respite Worker

Eagle Valley Children’s Home is a long-standing nonprofit organization serving children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Reno–Carson region. For over 80 years, the organization has provided compassionate, high-quality care and support to individuals and their families. As Nevada’s only Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) for people with disabilities, Eagle Valley Children’s Home offers both Residential and Respite Programs tailored to complex needs. The Respite Program provides trusted short-term care that allows caregivers vital time to rest, recharge, and attend to their own well-being.

About the role

The Respite Worker is a full-time, on-site role located in Carson City, NV, supporting children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Respite Program. This role provides direct care and supervision, assisting with daily living activities such as personal care, meals, recreation, and safety monitoring. The Respite Worker helps implement individualized care plans, follows medical and behavioral support directions, and documents care and observations according to program standards.

Day-to-day responsibilities include engaging individuals in meaningful activities, promoting independence and dignity, maintaining a clean and supportive environment, and collaborating with team members to ensure consistent, high-quality care. The Respite Worker also communicates regularly and professionally with families and colleagues to support continuity of care and uphold the mission and values of Eagle Valley Children’s Home.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct care and supervision to children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Respite Program.
• Assist with daily living activities, including personal care, meals, recreation, and safety monitoring.
• Implement individualized care plans and follow medical and behavioral support directions.
• Document care and observations according to program standards.
• Engage individuals in meaningful activities while promoting independence and dignity.
• Maintain a clean and supportive environment.
• Collaborate with team members to ensure consistent, high-quality care.
• Communicate regularly and professionally with families and colleagues to support continuity of care.

Qualifications

• Experience providing respite or short-term relief care for individuals with disabilities, or in similar support roles.
• Knowledge of and comfort working with individuals with developmental disabilities, including children and adults.
• Experience working with children in home care, residential, or community-based settings.
• Strong communication skills, including clear verbal and written communication, active listening, and respectful interaction with individuals, families, and team members.
• Ability to provide safe, compassionate, hands-on care, including support with personal care, mobility, and daily living activities.
• Reliability in following care plans, safety protocols, and documentation requirements; attention to detail and sound judgment.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and respond calmly to challenging behaviors or emergencies.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; relevant training or coursework in human services, caregiving, or related fields is beneficial.
• CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain), valid driver’s license if transportation support is needed, and ability to meet any state or agency background check requirements.
