Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of techniques and treatment modalities for patients of varying ages, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric.
  • Follows best practices to reduce potential medication errors.
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities for the assigned shift.
  • Documents all pertinent data on the patient’s medical record after completing service.
  • Administers respiratory therapy treatments, understanding the purpose and possible side effects of each.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of oxygen delivery methods and equipment, remaining alert to possible side effects.
  • Follows departmental equipment sterilization procedures.
  • Sets up and monitors mechanical ventilators, including airway management and tracheal suctioning.
  • Performs arterial punctures to obtain blood samples for gas analysis, understanding complications and contraindications.
  • Affirms patient needs and tolerance for treatment, reassessing responses to therapy.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly, inspecting and testing to ensure functionality.
  • Formulates and evaluates teaching plans based on patient learning needs, including family involvement as appropriate.

  • Ability to function and assist others in stressful, fast-paced environments and effectively apply stress management techniques.
  • Ability to resolve issues and work independently within the scope of their certification.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement, diplomacy, and a professional demeanor.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate by reading, writing and typing legibly, speaking and comprehending English effectively to carry out job requirements.
  • Experience with computers.
  • Critical thinking and patient assessment skills, with the ability to evaluate and modify plan of care.
  • Ability to ensure infection control.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including documentation in the patient care record (EMR), and ability to use and adapt to computer systems and applications.
  • Airway management skills, including insertion and maintenance of a patent airway.
  • Ability to provide optimal respiratory support including administration of oxygen and Heliox, administration of inhaled medications, lung expansion, and bronchial hygiene therapy.
  • Ability to appropriately initiate, operate, manage, and liberate non-invasive and invasive modes of mechanical ventilation.
  • Ability to perform ABG Puncture, analysis, arterial cannulation using sterile procedure, and hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Ventilator patient transportation.
  • Knowledge and skill to care for the pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient in a health care delivery system.
  • Prior use of electronic medical records (EMR).

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary Science.
  • State Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or State Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).
  • Active NBRC Credentialed Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Active NBRC Credentialed Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).
  • Basic Life Support - CPR Cert (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Cert (ACLS).
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support Cert (PALS).
