About the Role

Under limited supervision, directs the hospital’s Respiratory Therapy Services. Plans, directs, and monitors clinical and technical operations, functions, and resources of the Respiratory Therapy Department. Administers respiratory therapy and life support to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system. Performs diagnostic testing of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of heart and lung disorders. Ensures departmental compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in hospital CQI activities.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, defines, and develops Respiratory Care’s scope of Practice, including planning, development, and implementation of new services.
  • Develops, reviews, and revises hospital-specific respiratory therapy policies and procedures.
  • Reviews and revises addendums to Kindred CORE policies and procedures as appropriate.
  • Manages the departmental workforce, including interviewing, hiring, orientation, performance evaluation, competency verification, staff education, scheduling, problem resolution, and disciplinary action.
  • Manages departmental equipment and supply needs, including evaluation and justification of capital equipment, ensuring equipment preventive maintenance and repair compliance, and compliance with division supply guidelines.
  • Monitors time and attendance, ensuring salaries are appropriate and the department operates within budgetary guidelines.
  • Develops and implements efficient services or measures aligned with the hospital’s Mission/Vision.
  • Ensures correct administration of respiratory medications and treatments based on patient age and clinical conditions.
  • Ensures staff competency in performing all aspects of patient care safely, including reading and implementing physician orders, analyzing arterial blood gases, and operating devices and equipment.
  • Schedules cardiopulmonary procedures for inside and outside sources.
  • Maintains records and reports.
  • Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure proper functioning and readiness for patient use.
  • Interacts professionally with patients and families, involving them in the formation of the plan of care.
  • Performs, trains, and evaluates performance on all essential functions of the Respiratory Therapist and Respiratory Therapy Supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must read, write, and speak fluent English.
  • Basic computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office, word-processing, and spreadsheet software.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation standards and compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of respiratory therapy and cardiology studies, treating patients appropriately based on professional standards.
  • Ability to demonstrate critical thinking, appropriate prioritization, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work under stress and respond quickly in emergency situations.
  • Good and regular attendance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy or Administration preferred.
  • Current Respiratory Therapy license from the appropriate state licensing body.
  • Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential in compliance with the National Board for Respiratory Care Credential Maintenance Program (CMP).
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
  • Minimum three years of previous experience in all aspects of respiratory care services.
  • Previous management experience preferred.
  • Experience managing a Point of Care ABG Lab preferred.
