Respiratory Care Therapist Student

About the role

Second‑year student in an approved and accredited Respiratory Care Program (RCS) performing basic respiratory care treatments and procedures under the proximal supervision of a licensed Registered Respiratory Therapist. Works flexible hours in 12‑, 10‑ or 8‑hour shifts, assessing patients to determine cardiopulmonary status, implementing appropriate care protocols, and maintaining or improving cardiopulmonary hemodynamic status.

Responsibilities

• Administer supplemental oxygen as prescribed by physician order or via departmental patient care protocols; document procedures accurately in the EPIC EMR in real time.
• Administer intermittent therapy (small volume nebulizer, MDI, etc.) – bronchodilators, steroids, mucolytics, etc. – as prescribed or per protocol; document accurately in EPIC.
• Properly assess and monitor patients during administration of oxygen and intermittent therapy.
• Administer bronchopulmonary hygiene.
• Implement airway clearance techniques (chest physiotherapy, coughing/deep breathing, therapy vest, EzPap, Acapella, incentive spirometry) per physician order or departmental guidelines; document accurately in EPIC.

Requirements

• Second‑year student in an approved and accredited Respiratory Care Program with evidence of continued enrollment.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification (American Heart Association).

Preferred Qualifications

• ACLS/PALS certification.

Skills

• Effective and accurate communication, documentation, and technical skills, both verbally and in writing.

Schedule

0.10 FTE position; flexible scheduling with 12‑, 10‑ or 8‑hour shifts. Requirement: four 12‑hour shifts per six‑week schedule.
