Respiratory Care Practitioner II – St. Francis Medical Center

The Respiratory Care Practitioner II/Flat Rate/WEO (harmonized) position at St. Francis Medical Center is responsible for providing respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. Essential functions include serving as the shift “Charge Therapist,” assisting physicians with procedures, performing CPR, conducting PFTs, and educating patients and families.

Responsibilities

• Serves as the shift “Charge Therapist” ensuring adequate respiratory care staff and adequate staffing levels for the next shift.
• Aids in the performance of procedures such as bronchoscopy, tracheotomy intubation, and tracheostomy endotracheal tube changes.
• Performs CPR including closed chest compressions and airway management techniques.
• Conducts prescribed therapeutic procedures to maintain a patient's airway, including use of appropriate airways and maintaining airway humidification.
• Selects, assembles, monitors, and evaluates mechanical ventilators for proper function and operation, including correction of malfunctions.
• Administers intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) or aerosol therapy, taking safety precautions and documenting procedures.
• Performs postural drainage, vibration, and percussion to ensure proper drainage of bronchial secretions, checking orders and X-rays before initiating treatment.
• Instructs patients and families in various therapies, including incentive spirometer, metered dose inhaler (MDI) administration, postural drainage, and clapping, oxygen therapy, ventilator care, and home aerosol therapy.
• Procures sputum for culture and sensitivity or airway clearance using various methods.
• Evaluates normal and pathologic blood and urine laboratory values, performs arterial punctures and analysis, and interprets arterial blood gases (ABGs).
• Maintains all Respiratory Therapy equipment and supplies, responding to cardio-pulmonary resuscitations as needed.

Requirements

• Current Respiratory Care License in the state they are working.
• National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) credentialed.
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association certification required.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association or Red Cross certification required.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - American Heart Association certification required.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - AAP/AWHONN certification preferred.
• Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) certification preferred.
• Adult Critical Care Specialist (ACCS) - NBRC certification preferred.
• Valid driver’s license (required for Home Care/DME).

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree related to Respiratory Therapy, Health care, Healthcare Admin, or Business Admin (preferred).
• Two years of experience as a Respiratory Care Professional.

• Therapeutic Procedures to include CPAP/BiPap, jet aerosol, oxygen therapy, incentive spirometry, chest physiotherapy, pulse oximetry, high flow oxygen, continuous aerosols, ventilator management, diagnostic testing.
• Understanding of EKGs, electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias.
• Arterial blood gas punctures and testing.
• Airway maneuvers.
• Bedside pulmonary function.
• Knowledge of chest suction equipment.
• Knowledge of chest X-ray interpretation.
